Volleyball Cruises Past Clark Atlanta Into The Record Book

Savannah, Ga. – Last Friday, the 2022 Savannah State women's volleyball did much more than just win a key conference match, they etched their names in the school's record book.

The Lady Tigers make quick work of Clark Atlanta in Willcox-Wiley in the straight sets to pick up their 11th overall win of the season and the 11th Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) victory, setting a new school record for the most conference wins in a regular season.

Savannah State improved to 11-9 on the season and 11-5 in the SIAC as well as 7-2 in the SIAC East Division. They are ranked No. 2 in the SIAC East Division into their final three matches of the regular schedule.

The 2022 Lady Tigers are one of the best teams in recorded school history—since 1994. The last team to earn 11 overall wins was the 2009 squad under Head Coach Malik Jones, playing as an NCAA Division I Independent program. They finished that season 11-19.

Sophomore setter Jessee Grubesic started Friday's match with a killer opening salvo, serving up 10 consecutive, unanswered points including five service aces, to set the tone for the match.

Savannah State won the opening set 25-9. But the short-handed Clark Atlanta regrouped in the second set. Savannah State opened with an 8-4 run, and then the Panthers responded with a run of their own and soon were down by only two points, 7-9.

Clark Atlanta continued to battle, but the Lady Tigers broke away with a 6-0 run sparked by a kill from Destiny Gaines. Later, Destinee Langston served up the final three points of the set with Gaines recording the final kill for a 25-15 Savannah State win and a 2-0 lead.

Towards the end of the third set, Savannah State led 20-10, only five points from a match win. But the stingy Clark Atlanta sparked a little run behind some strong serving from Jalen Dickerson.

Jasmine Nettles recorded a kill to make it 24-16 and put the Lady Tigers within a point of the match win. The Panthers responded with a 3-0 run to make it 24-19. A service error from Clark Atlanta handed Savannah State the 25-19 set win and the 3-0 match victory.

Langston recorded 12 kills and nine digs to lead Savannah State. Allena Norton had nine kills and five digs and Grubesic finished with 22 assists and six service aces.

Savannah State returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 27 against Edward Waters. First serve in Jacksonville, Fla. is set for 6 p.m.
