Lady Tigers Clobber Allen

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Jessee Grubesic opened Friday's match against Allen with six straight service points to start a dominating performance from Savannah State.

The Lady Tigers beat Allen in straight sets, 3-0, to improve to 8-8 overall on the season and 8-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule. This was their first SIAC match against Allen after the Columbia, S.C. team joined the conference as a full member this year.

A little over midway through the season, Savannah State is in third place in the SIAC East Division standings. They trail Edward Waters (8-1) and Albany State (11-2).  They have six remaining matches in the regular season—all of which are conference games.

Grubesic's opening salvo was extended to a 10-1 lead on Friday in the first set behind two kills from Destinee Langston and a service ace from Jasmine Nettles. Allen never recovered from the onslaught, as the Lady Tigers took set one 25-16.

The Yellowjackets opened the second set with a little more mustard, pushing out to a 2-1 lead early. But the Lady Tigers answered quickly, tying the match up and then taking a 7-5 lead on a kill from Langston.

The following 11 points would go Savannah State's way as Langston served up a massive Savannah State run that pushed them out to a 17-5 advantage en-route to a 25-12 win in set two.

Grubesic opened the final set serving up a 3-0 run as the Lady Tigers again dominated. Midway through, they led 14-5 and it was all but over. Savannah State won the third set 25-17 sealing up the 3-0 match victory.

Langston led the Lady Tigers with nine kills and 10 digs and five service aces on the night. Allena Norton put up nine digs, and four blocks. Gaines led at the net with six blocks and Serteria Butler tacked on five. Grubesic had 16 assists and three service aces.

Savannah State returns to action on Friday. They host Benedict College in Willcox-Wiley Gym at 6 p.m.
