Lady Tigers Take Down Benedict; Move Up In SIAC Standings

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's volleyball extended their winning streak to four straight on Friday night with an excellent performance against a tough Benedict team—beating them 3-0 for the second time this year.

Into the final six matches of the regular season, the Lady Tigers have moved into second place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division Standings. The win on Friday extended their overall record to 9-8 and their conference record to 9-4.

Savannah State trails Albany State (12-2)—who they beat in Tiger Arena in late September—in the standings. Edward Waters (8-2) is now in third followed by Benedict (6-7) in fourth.

Historically, the Lady Tigers have struggled against Benedict. But this year has been different. The Lady Tigers beat them in Columbia, 3-0, on Oct. 4 for their first win against the SIAC foe since rejoining the conference in 2019. However, Friday's win did not come easy for Savannah State.

Jasmine Nettles opened with a kill on the first serve and then tacked on two service points to put Savannah State up early. Later, Destinee Langston opened a 4-0 run for Savannah State with a service ace.

But Benedict bounced back with their own little run to make it 10-8 Savannah State. A few serves later and it was all tied up at 14. But Jessee Grubesic changed the dynamic of the game, serving up a monster 9-0 run for a 21-15 lead for the Lady Tigers. Nettles served up the final three points for Savannah State for the 25-18 set win.

Savannah State led for most of the second set. Late in the set, Savannah State was up 23-19, knocking on the door of set win number two. A costly error gave Benedict their 20th point and then Jordan Reeves served up two more points to make it 23-22. Allena Norton recorded a kill. Jordan Gilbert responded in kind for Benedict to make it 24-23. Then Gilbert handed SSU the 25-23 set win with a service error.

Up 2-0 in the match, Savannah State opened the third set with a dominate performance from Nettles. The sophomore, outside hitter recorded a kill and then served up four points for a 5-0 run to open the set.

Benedict struggled as the Lady Tigers tacked on point after point and soon led 11-4 forcing the visitors into a timeout. Over the subsequent 13 serves, Benedict bounced back and soon the set was tied 14 all.

Nettles broke the stalemate with a three-point run. Benedict continued to battle, but it wouldn't be enough down the stretch. Into the final five points, SSU committed a costly error, but Nettles recorded back-to-back kills to lift the Lady Tigers to a 24-21 lead. Jade Hollins recorded a kill for Benedict and then committed an error to hand Savannah State the set, 25-22, and the match win.

Savannah State travels to Atlanta on Monday to play Clark Atlanta, before returning to Savannah on Wednesday to face Fort Valley State.
