SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State hosts Kentucky State for a week five, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division/West Division crossover match in Theodore A. Wright Stadium.

The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. Due to inclement weather from Hurricane Ian, the game was moved to Sunday at 3 p.m.

Savannah State and Kentucky State have been playing each other since 1949. Sunday will be the 12th meeting of the programs. With last year's 21-17 victory in Frankfort, Kentucky, the Tigers took a 6-5 lead in the overall series.

This will be the first meeting of new Savannah State Head Coach Aaron Kelton and Interim Head Coach Paul Hamilton.

The Tigers return to Theodore A. Wright Stadium for a big Homecoming game on Oct. 8 against Virginia Lynchburg (3 p.m.).

LAST GAME
Savannah State closed out a three-game road swing last Saturday in Atlanta. Following a scoreless first quarter, Morehouse struck first with a field goal. But the Savannah State offense—with quarterback Jadon Adams leading in his first collegiate start—roared back with a touchdown on their next possession. The Tigers never trailed again en-route to a 15-3 victory.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYERS
Jadon Adams, a redshirt-freshman, started the season as the third-string quarterback and now leads the Tigers in passing and rushing stats. From the pocket, he's completed 17-of-30 attempts this year with 253 passing yards and four touchdowns. On the ground, Adams has rushed 46 times for 254 yards and three touchdowns.

When the ball is in the air, look for #17 Da'Shun Mitchell, #5 Randy Scott, #4 Brent Carr, or #7 DeMarion Colbert to make a big play. Mitchell leads the receiving core with 13 catches for 176 yards. Scott, a Savannah native, played in his first game last week and caught six passes for 101 yards and one touchdown.

On the ground, you will see powerback #18 Shamarcus Poole and freshmen #32 Joseph Hampton handle the runs. Poole has 190 yards on 39 carries this year. Hampton has 75 yards on 17 carries.

TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYERS
Savannah State's defensive line has been tough all year, keeping pressure on offenses and forcing quick plays and turnovers. That is thanks to a returning core that includes #0 Makenly Newbill (16.5 tackles) and #49 Jonathan Glover. Lineman Tony Rountree will be out this week with an injury.

In the backfield, #48 Tavare Brewton (17.5 T), and #23 Amiri Johnson (19.0 T) lead the Tigers' defensive stats. Brewton had a fantastic game against Morehouse. The true freshman and graduate of Islands HS in Savannah, led with a team-high eight tackles (4 solo, 4 assisted), including 2.0 tackles for a loss.

In a goal-line stand on Savannah State's 3-yard line, Brewton registered three consecutive tackles (1 solo, 2 assisted) to push Morehouse back to the 11-yard line and keep them out of the end zone. The Savannah State defense held Morehouse to only 128 yards of offense including only 54 passing yards.

Brewton was named the SIAC Newcomer of the Week on Monday for his performance.

LAST MATCHUP WITH MC
Savannah State scored 21 points in the first half against Kentucky State in their last matchup—on Oct. 2, 2021. The Thorobreds managed 10 in the first half and tacked on seven more in the fourth. Late in the fourth, Kentucky State was sitting in Savannah State's redzone, looking to take the lead, when Daniel Dorsey snagged an interception on third and 12 to all but end the game. The Tigers got the ball back with three minutes to play and finished it off with a 21-17 win.

OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT
Kentucky State has struggled this season under Interim Head Coach Paul Hamilton. They opened with a 33-10 loss to Delta State and then were edged out by Fort Valley State 9-7 in the week two. The last two weeks have hurt. They lost to University of Dayton 46-3 and Benedict 40-14. Quarterback Johnathan Jerry is 5-for-16 this year with 88 passing yards. On the ground, Christian Coneway leads the stats with 166 yards on 34 carries.
