Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Fall To Lane College In Overtime

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Fighting until the bitter final seconds, Savannah State men's basketball fell to Lane College, 69-64, in an overtime thriller Saturday at Tiger Arena.

The Tigers drop to 5-7 overall and 4-3 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play. Next up, they travel to Fort Valley State on Jan. 15 for a 3 p.m. SIAC game.

With 2:31 to play, in a back-and-forth contest, Trey DeLoach dropped a field goal off a turnover to lift Savannah State to a 57-52 lead. Lane responded with a field goal from Tomonique Marion and then a key three-pointer from Justin Sylver at the 1:03 mark that tied the game at 57 all.

Ayjay Plain stepped up for Savannah State in the final minute, with a layup on a drive through the lane to lift the Tigers to a 59-57 lead with 33 seconds to play, setting off the crowd in Tiger Arena.

On Lane's ensuing possession, Marion dropped a buzzer-beating layup in the paint on a quick inside pass to tie the game at 59 and force extra minutes.

Early in the overtime period, the Tigers went up by two following a couple of good free throws from Avery Joyner. Lane responded with back-to-back field goals while the Tigers struggled to sink shots.

Then Justice Stanley got the crowd on their feet with an off-balance, long three-pointer he sank off the backboard as he was getting fouled, lifting the Tigers to a 64-62 lead with 2:47 to play.

Lane retook the lead, however, on three good free throws from Maximillion Bell who was fouled twice over the next few minutes. With 50 seconds to play, Lane led 65-64.

Both teams missed shots over the next 40 seconds. Chancellor Wright then sunk a good free throw, freezing the clock at 10 seconds with Lane in the lead. With possession, down three points and only seconds to play, Savannah State Head Coach Horace Broadnax called timeout to draw up a play.

Out of the time, the Tigers came down the floor, pumped the ball into the lane, but Tyran Davis was there to pick up his third steal of the game. Wright then added a fast break layup on the other end as the final buzzer sounded.

Joyner led the Tigers with 19 points on the night, hitting 5-of-6 three-point shots and 6-of-7 field goals. Marcus Scott added nine points for the Tigers while Stanley and Plain each had eight.
