Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Play No. 1 Benedict To The Wire, Fall In The Final Minutes

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Coming off a two week break, following two postponements, Savannah State men's basketball played the No. 1 team in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division down to the wire on Saturday.

With 3:05 left to play, Avery Joyner knocked down a three-pointer to tie the Tigers' game with Benedict College at 70 all. Joyner added two good free-throws six seconds later to give the Tigers a 72-70 lead.

Then Joyner added two more good free-throws a minute later, again putting his team in the lead. But Benedict followed that with an 8-0 run in the final 2:10 to squeak out the 80-74 win.

Joyner led four Tigers in double-digits with 20 points. Eleik Bowles added 15 points, Marcus Scott dropped 13 and Daryl Richardson added 11 in one of the highest scoring games of the season for Savannah State.

The Tigers fall to 5-8 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. They are currently in third place in the SIAC East Division behind Morehouse (11-6, 8-2) and Benedict (14-4, 9-1).

Savannah State men's basketball are set to play three games this week. On Monday, they travel back to Columbia to face off with SIAC provisional team Allen University in a non-conference doubleheader with the women's team.

They follow Monday's match with a makeup game against Clark Atlanta this coming Wednesday, Jan. 26 after the game, originally scheduled for Jan. 17, was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Tip-off in Tiger Arena is set for 7 p.m.

Then on Saturday, Savannah State men's and women's basketball host Albany State in a pivotal SIAC East Division showdown. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
