A Team Effort In The Final Seconds Lifts Tigers Past Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – In the final seconds of a close back-and-forth game, Savannah State executed brilliant team play to skim past a good Tuskegee team on Wednesday and pick up their fourth Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win.

Tuskegee's Davis Deveraux dropped two good free-throws with 17 seconds to play, tying the game for the ninth time at 59 all. The Golden Tigers were looking for their fourth consecutive win and fourth SIAC victory of the season on Wednesday.

On the ensuing possession, with time ticking away quickly, Savannah State spread the floor for Avery Joyner to drive the lane. Joyner kicked the ball out to a wide-open Marcus Scott who snapped off a perfect 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds to play giving the Tigers a 62-59 advantage.

Tuskegee, still not beat, tossed a long inbounds pass from the baseline to the top of the key, connecting with Devereaux who pulled up for the buzzer-beater. But Trey DeLoach came in clutch with a block as the clocked ran out of time and Savannah State sealed up their second road win of the week.

Savannah State's team effort in the final seconds was mirrored in the stats with three players in double figures. Ayjay Plain led the scoring effort with 16 points. Joyner added 13 of his own and DeLoach tacked on 10.

The Tigers improve to 5-6 overall this the season and 4-2 in conference. Following a rough 1-5 start to the season, Savannah State is now the No. 2 team in the SIAC East Division and with their fourth SIAC win are the No. 2 in the entire conference, trailing only Benedict (10-3, 7-0).

They face Lane College in Tiger Arena this coming Saturday, Jan. 8. Tip-off for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
