Tigers Squeeze Past Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. – The Tigers overcame a second half slump on Monday night, taking down Spring Hill College, 75-70, to pick up their third Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win of the season.

Savannah State improved to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in SIAC action with Monday's road win. The Tigers will travel to Tuskegee, Alabama for a Jan. 5 conference game against Tuskegee University before returning home on Jan. 8 to face Lane College in Tiger Arena.

The Tigers opened Monday's game with a 16-3 run in the first seven minutes. By the half, they led 43-33. Avery Joyner, who just regained eligibility, scored 13 points in the opening half to lead Savannah State.

But the Badgers fired back in the opening minutes of the second half with a 13-3 run in the first five minutes. With 15:25 on the clock, Spring Hill tied the game up at 47 all.

Following a media timeout, and then a foul, Marcus Scott dropped two free throws and Eleik Bowles hit a three-pointer to lift the Tigers back into the lead. Bowles hit another jump shot at the 5:36 mark to give Savannah State a 62-52 advantage.

Spring Hill fought back down the stretch, but the Tigers held on going 11-for-1 from the charity strip in the final minutes for the five-point win.

Joyner, in his second game this season, led the Tigers with 21 points on the night. Justice Stanley added 10 in the win while Ayjay Plain tacked on nine.
