Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Blaze Past Clark Atlanta

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State men's basketball blazed past Clark Atlanta on Wednesday night in Tiger Arena, picking up a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win.

Every game through the next month is big for the Tigers as they work towards a top seeding ahead of the February 28 SIAC Championship. With Wednesday's win, they improved to 7-8, 5-4 SIAC, moving into the third place in the SIAC East Division standings.

They pushed out Albany State (7-13, 5-7) with the shift in the standings. Savannah State trails Morehouse (12-6, 9-2) and Benedict (14-4, 9-1) in the East Division.

On Wednesday, Savannah State opened with a 16-9 run over the first five minutes. But in a fast-paced, whistle heavy game, Clark Atlanta fired back later with a 5-0 run to cut the Tigers lead to 22-20 with 9:18 to play.

Down the stretch of the first half, Savannah State took advantage of a plethora of fouls to push out to a 13-point lead at 50-37 into the locker room. In the first half, 27 fouls were called. The Tigers hit 14-of-19 attempts from the charity strip.

Savannah State held onto their double-digit lead for most of the second half. In the final seven minutes, they turned on the offense with a 12-4 run capped by a field goal from Trey DeLoach for a 19-point advantage with 1:56 to play.

All told, there were 50 fouls called in the game with 31 of those being called on Clark Atlanta. The NCAA Division II record for most fouls called on both teams in a single game is 91—which was set in a Nov. 15, 1997 game between Northern State and Southern Indiana.

Avery Joyner led the Tigers in the win with 18 points. He was joined in double figures by four teammates. Marcus Scott put away 15 while Ayjay Plain scored 14, DeLoach put up 13 and Za'Khari Cobb recorded his first double-digit game of the year with 11 points.

Savannah State shot 70 percent from the free-throw line, hitting 19-of-27 attempts and 48 percent from the field, dropping 29-of-60 shots. All together both teams shot 66 free-throws in the game.
