Tigers Rally In The Second Half For A Big Win Over Allen

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Coming off a close loss to the top team in the conference on Saturday, Savannah State men's basketball bounced back on Monday with a solid 78-66 win over Allen University in a non-conference battle.
 
Trailing three points at the half, the Tigers came into the second half without any momentum. Allen quickly pushed out to a 40-33 lead. At the 18:19 mark, Daryl Richardson dropped a layup, drew a foul and added the and 1 to spark a 7-0 run for the Tigers that tied the game up.
 
Allen pushed back out to a 49-42 lead eight minutes later, but Savannah State responded with an 8-0 run to again tie the game up. Trey DeLoach then got the Tigers' offense rolling with a good layup at the 7:55 mark. Marcus Scott, Avery Joyner joined DeLoach in a big offensive push late in the half that put the Tigers up 65-56 with 5:19 to play.
 
With 3:24 to play, Justice Stanley dropped two good free throws to lift the Tigers to a 70-58 advantage, their largest of the game. The Tigers held on down the stretch for the final 12-point win.
 
Joyner led the Tigers with 22 points on the night. DeLoach tacked on 14 and Scott added 13 in the win.
 
Savannah State improved their field goal percentage from 35 percent in the opening half to 45 in the second half to close strong. They also managed an 81 percent clip from the charity strip dropping 17-of-21 attempts.  
 
Savannah State returns to action with three big Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) home games this week.
 
On Wednesday, the Tigers play a makeup game against Clark Atlanta. The contest was originally scheduled for Jan. 7 but was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
 
The Tigers then face Albany State on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. and will host Morehouse College, who's currently on a 9-game win streak, on Monday Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
