MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Savannah State baseball continues in the inaugural Black College World Series on Friday after beating Edward Waters on Thursday.

The Tigers, the No. 2 seed, are set to play Xavier of Louisiana, the No. 1 seed, at 12:30 p.m. CST/1:30 p.m. EST today in the double-elimination tournament. This will be the first time these programs play each other. The winner of the game continues on with a 7:30 p.m. game this evening and the loser will be eliminated.

Originally, the World Series was designed with two divisional brackets split between NCAA Division II and NAIA. Savannah State was seeded at No. 1 in the D-II division after finishing the regular season 13-5. Lane College and Kentucky State pulled out of the World Series, so the divisions were dissolved and a new bracket was formed with no divisions. When the new bracket was formed, the Tigers were seeded No. 2 overall based on their regular-season record behind Xavier University of Louisiana.

SCOUTING REPORT | GAME 7
Savannah State opened the World Series with a 3-9 loss to Florida Memorial on Wednesday. The Tigers managed only three hits in that game. But they came roaring back against Edward Waters on Thursday--the only team who beat them three times this year.

The Tigers racked up 11 hits, including the only three out-of-the-park home runs, to beat Edward Waters. They coupled their hit parade with some stellar pitching from relievers Enrico Peele and Matthew Terrill for the revenge victory over Edward Waters.

Andrew Mann is set to start for Savannah State today. The redshirt freshman transfer has been clutch for the Tigers all season. Mann is 4-0 on the season with three starts. He has an ERA of 3.41 with 37 strikeouts in 29.0 innings of work.

Xavier entered the World Series with a bye as the No. 1 seed, playing their first game on Thursday. But Bluefield State, who had already won one game, came out swinging. Despite 17 strikeouts from Blair Frederick for Xavier, Bluefield was able to squeeze by 4-1 sending the No. 1 seed to the elimination bracket.

The winner of the 12:30 p.m. game will play the loser of a 4 p.m. game between Florida Memorial and Bluefield State to determine which of the final four teams head to the World Series final on Saturday.

ABOUT SAVANNAH STATE BASEBALL
Savannah State baseball first took the field in 1916. For over 50 years, they played mostly club level baseball against semi-pro teams and non-college teams until the program joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in 1969. From 1969-199, the Tigers won over 200 games. The 1976-77 squad won the school's first conference championship, beating Bethune-Cookman for the SIAC baseball title. The Tigers won five consecutive SIAC Championships from 1995-1999. In 2013, after elevating to NCAA Division I, Savannah State baseball won the school's first Division I title, beating Bethune-Cookman in the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. Several Tigers have been drafted to play Major League Baseball.
