Tigers Go Yard To Stay Alive in World Series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Edward Waters has been an Achilles heel for Savannah State all season, but the Tigers sent them packing on Thursday with three big home runs and a 9-6 victory.

Savannah State (No. 2) will continue in the double-elimination Black College World Series, playing the loser of game six between Bluefield State (No. 3) and Xavier (No. 1) Friday at 12:30 p.m. (CST) in game seven of the tournament. Edward Waters' season concludes with the loss.

The Tigers first saw Edward Waters on March 9 this year. They were blanked, 7-0, in the first game of a doubleheader that day. Edward Waters squeezed out a 10-9 win in the second game.

In the team's third meeting this season at the inaugural Jax Diamond Classic in Jacksonville, Florida, Savannah State held a 4-1 lead through eight innings, but a grand slam from Cayden Frankie sealed up 7-4 victory for Edward Waters.

Coming into tonight's game, both teams were facing the possibility of a season ending game. But following a very quiet batting effort in their first game of the World Series—managing only three hits across the nine-inning spread—Savannah State found a rhythm at the plate.

Edward Waters opened the scoring early. Marcus Judd was plated on an error after reaching on a single in the top of the first inning.

Jackson Hickox made his fifth start and sixth appearance for Savannah State this season on the mound. With no outs, Edward Waters loaded the bases. Hickox settled in and forced a line out, then a strikeout and then another line out to strand all the runners.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the frame. Lead-off man Joseph Smith singled to reach and then Dwayne Franklin singled. Luis Lamarche hit a fly to left and earned the sacrifice RBI, plating Smith and tying the game.

Phillip Woullard broke the stalemate in the second inning, sending a ball over the left field wall to give Savannah State a 2-1 lead in the third. Woullard registered the first out-of-the-park home run of the entire World Series.

The third inning proved to be fatal for Hickox. Following a walk and a single, Hickox loaded the bases on another walk. Kellin Washington then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Freddy Torres doubled to right, plating two runs to lift Edward Waters back into the lead.

Enrico Peele entered for Hickox following the double. Hickox exited after 2.0 innings pitched. He allowing four earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and four walks against 14 batters.

Peele, coming off a strong relief performance in yesterday's game, pitched 4.0 stellar innings for Savannah State, opening his appearance in the third with three strikeouts and one hit that scored a single run. After four stellar innings, Matthew Terrill entered for Peele in the top of the seventh inning.

From the fourth through the eighth, it was all Savannah State bats. In the third, they scored two more runs on a sacrifice fly from Lamarche and a double from Franklin.

In the fourth, with the momentum shifting against them, senior Turner Davis blasted a clutch home run, scoring Champion Robbins and lifting Savannah State back into the lead at 6-5. Later, Smith hit a sacrifice fly to plate Woullard and the Tigers were up by two runs after four.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, Woullard hit his second home run of the game over the 395-yard left field wall, scoring Davis who reached on a single and lifting the Tigers to a 9-5 lead.

With all the momentum into the closing innings, Savannah State merely had to hold on and not let Edward Waters sneak back into the game like earlier in the season.

Terrill did the work of an export closer. He stranded two runners and allowed no hits in the seventh and eighth innings. Into the ninth, with the victory at hand, Terrill faced a rally attempt from Edward Waters.

Frankie singled to reach, Torres walked and Joseph Eischen singled to load the bases with no outs. Carolos Garcia hit a hard ball to second base that Champion Robbins picked up just in time to tag out Eischen, but Frankie scored and Garcia reached on the fielder's choice. Then Terrill struck out Adrian Laro for the second out.

Woullard, Savannah State's MVP on the night, made a dashing run towards the visitor's dug out as Payton Shubert hit one straight up in the air in the next at bat. Woullard snagged the foul and Savannah State escaped the rally with a big win.

The Tigers racked up 10 hits in the win and the most home runs hit in the entire series. Franklin was 3-for-4 with one RBI on the night, while Woullard finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Davis went 2-for-4 with two RBI as well.

Terrill finished the closing effort with 3.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on two hits with three walks and five strikeouts against 14 batters.

Peele earned his third win of the season after 4.0 innings on the mound. He allowed no earned runs on two hits with three walks and a game-high six strikeouts against 17 batters.
