Baseball Concludes 2021 Season In Semifinals Of Black College World Series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Savannah State baseball closed out the 2021 season on Friday with a 2-7 loss to Xavier of Louisiana in the semifinals of the Black College World Series.

The Tigers (No 2. Seed) finished 14-7 overall this season. It's the program's first winning season since the 2013 team finished 33-23. The Tigers faced a rocky start and stop, pandemic-shortened season. Post-season action was halted in February when the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) canceled all spring championships.

Then they received an offer to play in the first-ever Black College World Series at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama and the post-season was revived. Originally, the World Series was designed with two divisional brackets split between NCAA Division II and NAIA.

Savannah State was seeded at No. 1 in the D-II division after finishing the regular season 13-5. Lane College and Kentucky State pulled out of the World Series, so the divisions were dissolved and a new bracket was formed with no divisions. When the new bracket was formed, the Tigers were seeded No. 2 overall based on their regular-season record behind Xavier University of Louisiana.

In Friday's elimination game, The Tigers opened the scoring in the second inning after a scoreless first. Turner Davis walked and Champion Robbins came in to pinch run for him. Cameron Diaz blasted a single through the left side, scoring Robbins and giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Xavier responded with some big hits. Co Co Simmoneaux facing a full count against Andrew Mann, singled up the middle, scoring Jon Santos and Blair Frederick who both reached on singles. But their lead would be short lived.

Savannah State opened the third with a lead-off triple from Jaden Oden. Oden was scored moments later on a sacrifice fly from Joseph Smith to tie the game at two all. Xavier responded quickly in the bottom of the inning. Frederick doubled to score Shane Goins, who was pinch running for Tristan Rodriguez, giving Xavier a 3-2 lead.

In the fourth, Savannah State managed a single hit, but failed to respond to Xavier's runs. With the momentum shifting, Xavier took full advantage with two singles to open the bottom of the fourth. On a single from Jose Fulgencio, Dillon Cousin scored and then Santos scored on a throwing error.

With runners on first and second and one out, Mann, making his sixth appearance and fourth start this season for Savannah State on the mound, held his composure registering back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Savannah State put two runners on with one out in the fifth, threatening to even up the game. Smith hit a grounder to short stop and Xavier turned a text book 643 double play to end the inning.

Into the bottom of the fifth, Xavier holding all the momentum, added to their lead, plating a single run on two hits for a 6-2 advantage. The inning also marked the final round for Mann. Rahmir Vaughn entered in the top of the sixth in relief.

Mann, in his first loss of the season, pitched 5.0 full innings, allowed five earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and three strikeouts against 30 batters. Vaughn pitched 3.0 innings in relief, allowed one earned run on one hit with one walk and no strikeouts.

It was all Xavier down the stretch, as the Tigers struggled to get runners on. Xavier plated one more run in the eighth inning on a solo home run from Tristan Rodriguez. Nigel Mayfield earned the pitching win after a complete game on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Savannah State opened the World Series with a 3-9 loss to Florida Memorial on Wednesday. The Tigers managed only three hits in that game. But they came roaring back against Edward Waters on Thursday—the only team who beat them three times this year.

The Tigers racked up 11 hits, including the only three out-of-the-park home runs of the series, to beat Edward Waters. They coupled their hit parade with some stellar pitching from relievers Enrico Peele and Matthew Terrill for the revenge victory over Edward Waters.
