SAVANNAH, Ga. – Following a three-game sweep of Clark Atlanta last weekend, Savannah State looks to, possibly, the final series of the season against Salem University, which opens with today's doubleheader.   

The series with Salem was originally scheduled to open the 2021 season for Savannah State. Due to inclement weather and later COVID-19 protocols, the game was moved to the end of the season, and then shifted again from Friday and Saturday to Sunday and Monday.  

SCOUTING REPORT | SAVANNAH STATE 
Savannah State put up a total of 60 runs in a breezy high-scoring, three-game sweep of Clark Atlanta last weekend. They enter this weekend 10-5 overall this season.

Following the cancelation of a series with Miles College that was originally scheduled to cap the season, this weekend might the final regular season series for the Tigers. They are considering adding games to their schedule, but nothing has been finalized.

From the plate, several Tigers are having outstanding seasons, despite the truncated pandemic schedule. Dwayne Franklin leads the dugout, batting .429 with 18 hits, including 6 doubles and 14 RBI. Luis Lamarche is batting .375 with 15 hits and 12 RBI. Phillip Woullard Jr. is batting .324 with 12 hits and 13 RBI. As a team, Savannah State is batting .340 this season with 169 runs on 152 hits and a .477 slugging percentage.
 
Savannah State's deep bullpen has a total ERA of 4.71 with a 1.36 WHIP. Andrew Mann leads with a 3-0 record, picking up wins in all of his appearances this season. Senior Christian Harkey has pitched in five games, and is 2-1 overall this year with a team low 2.95 ERA. Jackson Hickox and Manny Carucci have each had three starts, but have not yet picked up a win.

SCOUTING REPORT | SALEM UNIVERISTY
The Salem Tigers enter the three-game series with Savannah State 5-18 overall this season. They are coming off a 10-16 loss to Concord University on April 7.  

Salem is led at the plate by Austin Earl who's batting .244 this season with 19 hits and 16 RBI. Alan LaRocque is batting .235 with 12 hits and 13 RBI. Kasey Buchanan is batting .233 with 14 hits this season.

Salem's deep well of a bullpen has a combined ERA of 9.19 this season. Starting pitchers Jaryd Lund, Dominic Curole and Anthony Alvarez along with reliever Jason Gomez have done the lion's share of the work from the mound. Lund is 1-3 overall with a 4.91 ERA after 25.2 innings pitched. Curole is 1-3 overall with a 6.04 ERA after 25.1 innings on the mound.
 

ABOUT SAVANNAH STATE BASEBALL 
Savannah State baseball first took the field in 1916. For over 50 years, they played mostly club level baseball against semi-pro teams and non-college teams until the program joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in 1969. From 1969-199, the Tigers won over 200 games. The 1976-77 squad won the school's first conference championship, beating Bethune-Cookman for the SIAC baseball title. The Tigers won five consecutive SIAC Championships from 1995-1999.In 2013, after elevating to NCAA Division I, Savannah State baseball won the school's first Division I title, beating Bethune-Cookman in the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. Several Tigers have been drafted to play Major League Baseball. Most notably, pitcher Kyle McGowin, who led SSU to the MEAC title, is currently on the roster as a relief man for The Nationals and celebrated a World Series win in 2019.
