SAVANNAH, Ga. – Following a three-game sweep of Voorhees last week, Savannah State baseball will toss out the first pitch on their home field this season at 1 p.m. today.

Due to a mandate from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), both games will be closed events.

SCOUTING REPORT | SAVANNAH STATE
After a delayed start to the 2021 season, the Tigers opened the year on Feb. 27 with a doubleheader against Voorhees in Denmark, S.C. Savannah State rolled by Voorhees 18-4 in the opening game, sealed up the doubleheader sweep with an 8-2 victory in the second game and solidified the series victory with an 18-2 win on Sunday, Feb. 28.

At the plate, Savannah State is led by returner Cameron Diaz, who racked up 6 runs on 7 hits with 4 RBI in the Voorhees series. He's slugging .900 at the moment with 10 at bats. DJ Franklin is batting .600 right now, registering 4 runs on 6 hits and five RBI. Junior Max Tracey is batting .583, leading the team in RBI with 9.

From the mound, the Tigers tested nine pitchers against Voorhees. Christian Harkey, Enrico Peele and Andrew Mann all picked up wins in the series. Mann leads the staff with six innings under his belt and six strikeouts.

ABOUT SAVANNAH STATE BASEBALL
Savannah State baseball first took the field in 1916. For over 50 years, they played mostly club level baseball against semi-pro teams and non-college teams until the program joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in 1969. From 1969-199, the Tigers won over 200 games. The 1976-77 squad won the school's first conference championship, beating Bethune-Cookman for the SIAC baseball title. The Tigers won five consecutive SIAC Championships from 1995-1999.

In 2013, after elevating to NCAA Division I, Savannah State baseball won the school's first Division I title, beating Bethune-Cookman in the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. Several Tigers have been drafted to play Major League Baseball. Most notably, pitcher Kyle McGowin, who led SSU to the MEAC title, is currently on the roster as a relief man for The Nationals and celebrated a World Series win in 2019.
