Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Following A 363-Day Delay, Savannah State Men’s Basketball Return To The Court

SAVANNAH, Ga. – At 7:30 p.m. on March 3, three-hundred and sixty three days after last playing a game, the Savannah State men's basketball team finally hit the hardwood.

Following a turbulent year, filled with starts and stops, COVID-19 postponements, reschedules, and a never-ending quest to get back to the game, the Tigers were set for a 6 p.m. tip-off in Tiger Arena on Wednesday, but the delays continued. Allen University suffered mechanic issues with their transportation, delaying the start time for an hour and a half.

Head Coach Horace Broadnax put together a number of different lineups, testing his new team in preparation for the other two games on the schedule. Every one of the 13 Savannah State Tigers who dressed saw at least two minutes of action.

Darius Williams dropped a 3-pointer at the 12:04 mark of the opening half lifting Allen to a 23-14 lead and capping an 11-3 run for the visitors. Out of a media timeout, Marcus Scott sank a second chance shot in the paint to open a small run for Savannah State.

Trey DeLoach drained a fast-break layup with 6:45 to play, tying the game at 65. A few seconds later, following an Allen turnover, DeLoach hit another basket in the paint to give Savannah State their first lead since early in the game. But Elijah Fabyan responded for Allen with a 3-pointer moments later to strip that lead away.

DeLoach responded in kind at the 5:22 mark, opening a 9-0 late-quarter run for the Tigers. A back-and-forth ensued for the final minutes. With a 51-49 lead, and 8 seconds to play, Broadnax called a timeout.

On an in-bounds pass, Daryl Richardson tossed up a perfect alleyoop to DeLoach who dunked for a 53-49 Savannah State lead and the first sign of momentum for the Tigers. With 4 seconds to play, Allen came up the floor fast, from near the half-court line, Williams lobbed up a logo 3-pointer, which sank on the buzzard, to cut Savannah State's lead to 53-52 into the locker room.

Undeterred by the last second shot, into the second half Savannah State extend their lead to 10 points at the 14:25 mark behind a 3-pointer from Scott. But down the stretch, the Tigers strained as Allen—playing in their ninth game of the season—held their form leading to a 98-94 victory over the Tigers.

Savannah State had 29 fouls called on them, sending the visitors to shoot 44 shots from the free-throw line. Allen hit 33 of those free shots and shot 40.9% from the field. The Tigers only went to the line 15 times.

Savannah State shot 50.7% from the field and hit 14-of-30 3-point attempts on the night. But they failed to win the rebound game, as Allen picked up 49 to Savannah State's 35 boards.

DeLoach scored a career-high 28 points to lead the field. Newcomer Christian Blue opened the game nearly flawless from deep hitting three consecutive 3-pointers. Blue finished 5-for-8 from beyond the arc with 15 points on the night. Scott scored 21 points in the loss for Savannah State.

Williams led Allen with 23 points. Virgil Lackey scored 19 points and went 7-for-10 from the charity strip. Cameron Sembly added 16 or the visitors.

Savannah State have only two more games on the schedule. They are set to play Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama on March 6 and March 7 at 2 p.m. CST.
