Men’s Basketball Conclude Truncated Season With Twin Losses To Miles

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Savannah State men's basketball team concluded its COVID-19 truncated 2020-21 season this past weekend with two losses to Miles College.

In the first game, the Tigers started well capturing an early lead against Miles, going up by two points minutes into the start of the first half. The lead was short lived, however, as Miles racked up 10 unanswered points, pushing out to a 19-point lead midway through the half. Into the locker room, Miles held a 36-19 lead.

Miles College, the reigning Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Champions, continued the offensive barrage into the second half, amassing a 29-point lead, the highest of the quarter. Miles finished hard down the stretch sealing up a 64-42 win in Saturday's first game. Trey DeLoach led the Tigers with 17 points in the loss. Andrew Okorodudu added 11.

In their next meeting, on Sunday, Miles would seal up the weekend sweep, but not without a fight from the Tigers. Miles ended the first half of the game up by eight points, 26-18. The Tigers opened the second half with 9-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Marcus Scott at the 16:10 mark to lift Savannah State to a 27-26 lead. Miles answered with an 8-0 run of their own to regain the lead. The momentum shift helped Miles push out to a 12-point lead with 4:31 to play.

Savannah State cut the home team's lead with a 5-0 run late in the half. DeLoach capped the run with a good free-throw at the 1:19 mark, cutting Miles leads to 50-42. But behind eight good consecutive free-throws, the Golden Bears sealed up the 58-46 win.

DeLoach again led the Tigers in the loss with 16 points. Justice Stanley added nine and five rebounds.

After the three-game season, DeLoach led the team in scoring, averaging 20.3 points an outing for a total of 61 on the season. Scott averaged 11.0 points a game with 33 on the season.

The Tigers conclude the season after only three-games due to wild few months that saw schedules change nearly every week. Originally, they were scheduled to begin in early January, but the SIAC moved the conference season to March. Savannah State's non-conference February schedule was cancelled due to COVID-19 protocol breaches and then in late February, the SIAC shut down conference championships.

The three games this season will not count as conference games, but will be entered into the records as the 2020-21 season.
