Game Recap: Baseball |

Tigers take one, but drop two in three-game series against Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. – Savannah State baseball is midway through its 2021 season and while they have the pitching this year and the bats, somedays the Tigers are just off. But when they're on, they're on.

The Tigers traveled to Albany, Georgia this weekend for a three-game series against fellow Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) member Albany State. Coming of a dominating series against Clark Atlanta, the Tigers were poised for a repeat, as they test their strength within the new conference in a season of free SAIC games—following the cancelation of championships this spring by the conference.

In game one on Friday, the Tigers and Golden Rams went scoreless through the opening three innings, Savannah State stranding two runners. In the bottom of the fourth, Albany State blasted three doubles, scoring three runs for the lead.

But the Tigers answered quickly in the top of the fifth. Turner Davis doubled to reach. Later, Gabriel Paxtot reached on a walk. Davis and Paxtot were plated on Joseph Smith's second home run of the season.

The game remained tied into the seventh inning. The Tigers struggled to plate runs, leaving runners on in the sixth and seventh. But Albany State recorded a home run of their own in the seventh, and plated another run for a 5-3 lead. The Golden Rams tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth for the 6-3 victory in the opening game.

Christian Harkey recorded a strong seven innings on the mound for Savannah State. He allowed five earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts against 29 batters. Harkey is 2-1 on the season with a 2.81 ERA and leads the bullpen in strikeouts with 20.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, both teams went scoreless through three innings. Savannah State plated four runs on four hits for their first lead of the series. The Tigers would tack on one more run in the sixth and Albany State finally plated two runs in the seventh—after stranding seven runners in the previous six innings—but it wouldn't be enough.

Savannah State held on for a 5-2 victory.

Leading in the win was freshman Andrew Mann who picked up his second pitching win of the season, going the full seven innings for the Tigers. Mann allowed two earned runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks against 31 batters. At the plate, Andrai Wright and Turner Davis led with two hits apiece.

The final game of the series was an ugly one for the Tigers. Albany State came out swinging, racking up a 7-0 lead after two innings. They plated another four more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth as Savannah State struggled to respond. The Tigers plated three runs in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Albany State sealed up a 15-4 victory behind 13 hits on the day.

The Tigers reached deep into the bullpen in the final game, with six pitchers getting a turn on the mound. Starter Darius Hatchette-Dunn recorded the loss, however, after allowing five earned runs on three hits with four walks.

Savannah State continues the season with the inaugural Jax Diamond Classic in Jacksonville, Florida against Edward Waters on March 22. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
