Baseball Tigers Dominate Clark Atlanta, Scoring 40 Runs On 31 Hits In Three-Game Series

ATLANTA, Ga. –Savannah State baseball bounced back from a disappointing home opener against Edward Waters last week with a three-game sweep of Clark Atlanta this weekend.

Over the three-game domination, Savannah State scored a total of 40 runs on 31 hits.

In the opening game on Friday, March 12, Savannah State racked up 19 runs on 13 hits over a full nine-inning spread. Andrai Wright led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Joseph Smith, Luis Lamarche and Dwayne Franklin each had two hits in the lopsided win.

Christian Harkey picked up his second pitching win of the young season, going 5.0 innings. He allowed no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. In relief, senior Manny Carucci pitched two innings and recorded four strikeouts.

The Tigers opened game two of the series—game one of Saturday's doubleheader—with a quick six run lead through the opening four innings. Clark Atlanta answered with single runs in the first and third. Both teams went scoreless through the final three innings—Savannah State picking up its fifth win of the season with a 6-2 final score.

Smith, Savannah State's lead-off man, led the team with two runs on two hits. Pitching in relief for starter Jackson Hickox, Matthew Terrill picked up his first win of the season on the mound. After 2.2 innings of work, Terrill allowed no runs on one hit with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Freshman Andrew Man recorded his first win of the season with an outstanding performance in the final game of the series against Clark Atlanta. Mann helped seal up a 15-0 shutout of Clark Atlanta with a full seven innings of work. Mann allowed no runs on three hits with 12 strikeouts and one walk—the best line for any Savannah State pitcher this season.

From the plate, Phillip Woullard led Savannah State going 3-for-4 with two runs and a season-high 5 RBI for the Tigers. Wright and Smith each added three hits and two RBI.

Baseball travels to Albany, Georgia for a four-game series against Albany State on March 19 and 20 before heading to Jacksonville, Florida on March 22 for a re-match against Edward Waters at the inaugural Jax Diamond Classic.

Tickets for the Jax Diamond Classic are currently on sale. Savannah State fans can use the password "SSU" when purchasing tickets and a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the Savannah State baseball program.

The game in Jacksonville is one of the only Savannah State baseball games that will allow fans in the stands, following a directive from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) that closed all athletic contests on Savannah State's campus to fans.
