Baseball Tigers Return To Action; Go 3-2 Over Opening Five Games

SAVANNAH, Ga. – After an unprecedented year, Savannah State baseball has finally returned to action.

Around 6:30 p.m. on March 10, 2020 Savannah State baseball put away their bats after an 8-3 victory over USC Beaufort. On March 12, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) halted all spring sports for member institutions, days before Savannah State was scheduled to kick of the conference season against Miles College.

Last fall, the baseball Tigers returned to practice, masked and anxious. After their 2020 season was cut short, they hoped the 2021 season wouldn't be interrupted. In January of this year, they released a 27-game regular season schedule that was set to start on February 12. But the weather interfered.

Then out of nowhere, the SIAC decided to cancel all spring championships on February 24. Savannah State baseball will continue, however, but without the opportunity to compete for a conference championship. But they could receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Championship.

On February 27, Savannah State baseball opened their season with a strong start. They clinched a three-game series against Voorhees College winning the opening doubleheader 18-4 and 8-2. On Feb. 28, the sealed the series win with an 18-2 victory in Denmark, South Carolina.

On Wednesday, the baseball Tigers played their first home game in nearly a year against Edward Waters College. It wasn't the home opener they hoped for.

In game one, Edward Waters plated three runs on two hits to open the game. The visiting Tigers added two more runs in the second inning and one more in the third and fourth innings. Despite their five hits in the game, Savannah State was unable to plate a single run, stranding eight runners.

Edward Waters claimed the shutout 7-0 victory in game one with Yabdiel Hernedez Echevarria securing the pitching win. Alfred Carucci was handed his first loss of the season after 1.1 innings on the mound.

Savannah State opened the second game more composed than the first. On the mound for the Tigers, Darius Hatchette-Dunn forced three-up and three-down to open the game. In the bottom of the frame, the Tigers racked up two quick runs on three hits after Luis Lamarche singled to center, scoring Champion Robbins and Joseph Smith who both reached on singles.

Edward Waters plated a single run in the top of the second, but Savannah State's offense took over in the bottom of the second scoring four more runs on five hits from Derek Rivera, Smith, Robbins, Lamarche, Andrai Wright.

Edward Waters cut into Savannah State's 6-1 lead with three more runs in the top of the fourth after a scoreless third inning. The Tigers plated two more runs to extend their lead to 8-4 after four complete innings. The visiting Tigers, however, came out swinging in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits to tie the game at eight after five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Edward Waters' Damani Thomas was walked to reach and was advanced to third after a steal and then a groundout. Joseph Eischen singled to center, scoring Thomas to lift Edward Waters to a 9-8 lead. The Tigers were unable to reach in the bottom of the frame, leaving the visitors with a lead into the final inning.

Edward Waters, behind two costly SSU errors, plated one more run in the top of the seventh.

In the final inning, trailing 8-10, Savannah State opened with a single from Turner Davis. Max Tracey reached on a fielder's choice that put out Dwayne Franklin—who was pinch running for Davis. Tracey got to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single from Cameron Diaz giving the home field Tigers some momentum.

With the tying run on second base, Charles Lee Jr. went deep into a pitch count before being walked. At the top of the lineup, with one out, and the winning run on base, Savannah State was poised to walk away with a victory. But Smith struck out. Robbins got a tiny piece of a ball that dribbled to the pitcher who tossed him out at first, sealing up the sweep for Edward Waters.

Savannah State out-hit Edward Waters 13-12 on the day but committed three costly errors. Rahmir Vaughn, pitching in relief, was handed the loss after giving up the lead. He pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Marco Trejo picked up the pitching win after 3.0 innings of work. He allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Darius Blasingane earned a save after 0.2 innings of work and one strikeout.

Savannah State continues the season with a three-game series against Clark Atlanta March 12 and 13 in Atlanta.
