Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Drop Non-Conference Game To Clayton State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Following a strong opening, Savannah State men's basketball were unable to string together two complete halves on Saturday, falling to Clayton State 75-56 in a non-conference game in Tiger Arena.

The Tigers fall to 1-4 on the season with the loss.

Clayton State opened Saturday's game with 7-2 run for the early lead, but the Tigers fired back with a 9-4 run to tie the game at 11 at the 14:59 mark. They then extended their run for a 17-13 lead two minutes later. Trey DeLoach hit a field goal at the 10:05 mark to lift Savannah State to a 19-13 lead.

But Clayton State fired back in the ensuing five minutes, taking a 22-21 lead at the 5:07 mark. The Tigers responded with 9-4 lead sparked by a good three-pointer from Marcus Scott. Just before the half, the Tigers took their largest lead of the game on a good free-throw from Eleik Bowles. With 1:05 to play, they lead the visitors 33-26.

However, the Lakers' Ricardo Lynch dropped a good three-pointer at the buzzer to cut Savannah State's lead to 33-29 into the locker room.  The Tigers only committed four turnovers to Clayton State's 10 in the opening half, but shot a poor 37.1 percent from the floor.

The second half opened with a back and forth, quick-paced battle. At the 16:45 mark, Jalen Shaw dropped a layup to tie the game at 38 all. The game was tied again a minute later at 40 all. Clayton State then broke the stalemate with a 14-0 run over a six minute period, all but taking the wind out of Savannah State.

The double-digit advantage would hold for Clayton State down the stretch as the Tigers went 9-for-13 in the final 10 minutes and committed a number of costly turnovers. Clayton State scored 10 points on turnovers and 20 in the paint, out-scoring the Tigers 46-23 in the second half.

Daryl Richardson and Scott led the Tigers in scoring with 10 points each. DeLoach and Bowles added nine to the scoring. Lynch led the entire field with 25 points, followed by Shaw who had 16 for Clayton State.

Savannah State opens a four-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) swing with back-to-back road games. They face Kentucky State on Dec. 11 and then Central State on Dec. 13. They return home on Dec. 16 to face LeMoyne-Owen College in Tiger Arena.
