Tigers Open Conference Play 1-1

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Savannah State men's basketball opened their Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule this weekend with back-to-back road games, going 1-1.
 
In their SIAC opener, the Tigers fell to Kentucky State 68-82 in Frankfort, Kentucky on Saturday. They rebounded on Monday with a 68-56 win over Central State.
 
Savannah State is 2-5 on the season.
 
Marcus Scott landed a three-pointer at the 12:25 mark of the opening half against Kentucky State, lifting the Tigers to a 16-14 advantage. The Thorobreds quickly responded in the ensuing two minutes to retake the lead. The home team pushed out to a double-digit lead behind a 7-0 run in the final two minutes of the half for a 40-27 lead into the locker room.
 
Kentucky State held onto their double-digit lead through most of the second half. With 9:38 ticking away, though, Christian Blue dropped two free-throws to open a 12-2 run over three minutes for the Tigers that cut Kentucky State's lead to 60-55 with 6:33 to play.
 
The late surge didn't hold as Kentucky State pushed back out to a double-digit advantage moments later and held on for the win.
 
Scott led Savannah State in the loss with 22 points, dropping 7-of-14 field goals and a season-high 5-of-7 three-point attempts. Trey DeLoach added 14 points in the loss and Blue tacked on 11.
 
In Monday's game, Scott kept the burners on, leading his team to their second victory of the year in their win against Central State. The Hinesville, Georgia native shot 7-for-14 from the field and 7-for-13 from beyond the three-point line for a season-high 23 points.  
 
But it was Andrew Okorodudu who got the party started for the Tigers, opening the game with back-to-back field goals for the early lead. Midway through the opening half Daryl Richardson dropped a layup in the paint to lift the Tigers to a 21-15 lead.
 
Central State battled back in the final minutes of the half though. With 35 seconds, Michael Reeves dunked to lift the home team to a 33-32 lead. But DeLoach fired back with his own dunk for the 34-33 Savannah State lead. With :01 to play, Central State's Marcus Steele hit a good free throw to tie the game up in at 34 all into the half.
 
Savannah State opened the second half with a 12-0 run capped with back-to-back three-pointers from Scott for a 46-35 lead. The Tigers would hold the momentum and a double-digit advantage down the stretch for the final score.  
 
The Tigers return to action on Thursday with an SIAC home game against LeMoyne-Owen College. Tip-off in Tiger Arena is approximately 7:30 p.m. – or 20 minutes after the women's game ends.
