Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Take Down LeMoyne-Owen

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State men's basketball opened their Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game against LeMoyne-Owen college on Thursday with the best start to a game all season, holding on for a big 69-56 win.

Savannah State improved to 3-5 overall with the win. They pushed out to a winning SIAC record at 2-1 as well.

The Tigers came out blazing against the Magicians, racking up a 20-5 run in the first eight minutes hitting 11-for-3 shots from the field. The huge run and early double-digit advantage was spurred by some stellar defense from Savannah State as they held the visitors to only 10 points in the first 13 minutes of the game.

Trey DeLoach drifted in a field goal at the 6:36 mark to lift Savannah State to a 35-12 lead. Daryl Richardson tacked on back-to-back field goals a minute later for the Tigers largest lead of the first half, a 26-point 39-13 advantage.

Undeterred, LeMoyne-Owen opened a 14-0 run to close out the first half, cutting Savannah State's lead to 39-27 into the locker room. The Tigers shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half.

The Magicians continued their push in the opening minutes of the second half with an 8-0 run to cut Savannah State's lead down to single digits at 41-35 with 15:44 on the clock.

But the Tiger defense stepped up and shut down the offensive push over the next five minutes, pushing back out to a double-digit lead. Richardson dropped two free-throws to lift SSU to a 56-40 lead at the 8:39 mark.

Savannah State held strong down the stretch, keeping the Magicians at bay despite a late push with a 6-2 run to close out the game.

DeLoach led the entire field with 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Marcus Scott had his seventh double-digit game of the season putting away 14 points and Richardson tacked on 10 for the Tigers. Christian Blue and Eleik Bowles each added 9 points in the win.

The Tigers travel to Alabama tomorrow for a key SIAC match against Miles College on neutral ground. They will play in the second game of the annual Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Basketball Celebration. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Central Standard Time.
