Lady Tigers Seal Up SIAC Championship Bid With Win Over Fort Valley

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Savannah State volleyball sealed up a post-season bid on Sunday with a 3-1 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win over Fort Valley State.

The Lady Tigers improved their overall record to 10-11 and their SIAC record to 6-7 with the win on Sunday. They also moved into the No. 3 spot in the SIAC East Division standings, taking Clark Atlanta's position ahead of the final two games of the season. Sunday's win secures a trip for the Lady Tigers to the 2021 SIAC Championship, where the top four teams from the SIAC East and West Divisions will vie for a chance to win a title. The tournament is set for Nov. 15-18 in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Savannah State will travel to Clark Atlanta this week for their second match with the Panthers this season. The Lady Tigers swept Clark 3-0 in their first meeting on Oct. 15. The Lady Tigers return home on Nov. 12 for their final game of the regular season.

In the opening set on Sunday, the Lady Tigers edged out a 25-21 set win to go up 1-0 following a 4-2 run in the final six points. The second set mirrored the first as Savannah State pushed out to a 2-0 lead with a 25-20 set win.

But Fort Valley rallied in the third set. Early on, they broke a tie game with a small run for a two-point lead. Savannah State bounced back quickly, taking a 12-10 lead on a service ace from Sydney Harville. But the home team kept it close down the stretch.

Posed to end the match, the Lady Tigers led 23-18 looking for their final two points. Fort Valley, however, came out swinging with a 7-0 run to seal up a 25-23 set win and cut Savannah State's lead to 2-1 into the fourth set.

In the fourth and final set, the teams played a point-for-point game. Trailing, Savannah State pushed out to a 18-17 lead with 7 consecutive points on serves from Samuel Caylen. Down the final stretch, Jedaiah Daniels and Jeilynn Brown recorded key kills to give the Lady Tigers a 25-20 set win and a 3-1 match win.

Imani Williamson led the Lady Tigers in the win with 12 kills, followed by Daniels (11) and freshman Jasmine Nettles (10). Nettles and Cook each registered two blocks in the win.
