Tigers Pick Up First Win Of The Young Season

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State men's basketball found what it was looking for on Saturday, a solid win.

From start to finish, the Tigers put together a complete game against a good opponent and came out with their first win of the season, beating Claflin 68-51 in Tiger Arena. Savannah State is 1-3 on the season.

In the opening five minutes, Christian Blue dropped back-to-back 3-pointers, Marcus Scott hit a trey, and Trey DeLoach scored two field goals for an 11-2 Savannah State run. The early scoring set the timbre of the game, as Claflin missed shots and turned the ball over five times.

Through the opening 20 minutes, Claflin kept Savannah State from a double-digit lead at first, but the Tigers held the momentum, pushing out to a 35-21 lead at the half.

Savannah State dropped 14 of 30 field goal attempts in the first half, and forced 11 turnovers, scoring 12 points. They hit 7-of-13 long balls as well for the comfortable lead at the half.

At the 6:59 mark of the second half, newcomer Austin Lewis dropped a 3-pointer to lift Savannah State a 63-33 lead. The triple-digit advantage didn't hold for too long as Claflin bounced back with a late rally attempt. The visitors put up 10-2 run in the waning minutes of the half, but it wasn't enough to eclipse the Tigers' advantage.

DeLoach led the field in scoring with a season-high 20 points and his first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. He hit 9-of-15 from the field and 1-1 of beyond the arc.

Eleik Bowels had one of his best nights this season, scoring 16 points for the Tigers. Scott and Blue each managed double-digit scoring with 10 and 11 points, respectively.

Savannah State is back in action on Dec. 4 in Tiger Arena with a non-conference game against Clayton State. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and tickets are now on sale at ssuathletics.com/tickets.
