Tigers Fall To Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Savannah State moved to 0-2 in the young season on Saturday with a 51-64 loss to Lander University on Saturday.

Trailing 26-37 at the half, the Tigers came out of the locker room with a bit of gusto. Daryl Richardson dropped a basket to open an 11-2 run for Savannah State that was capped with a three-pointer from Marcus Scott at the 13:33 mark, tying the game up at 41 all.

The tie held for a full three minutes before Lander's Martin Vogts hit a three-pointer. Missed shots on both ends of the court kept the score relatively within reach for both teams for the ensuing four minutes. Lander broke the stalemate with a few good field goals and a three-pointer from Zane Rankin at the 5:59 mark that lifted the home team to a 52-46 lead.

The Tigers struggled to hit shots down the stretch. Scott dropped another three-pointer at the 2:44 mark to cut Lander's lead to 60-51. But it would be the final points for Savannah State as they missed five shots and committed three turnovers to close the final minutes of the game.

Scott led the scoring for Savannah State with 19 points on the night. He went 5-for-11 from beyond the arc and 7-for-15 from the field.  Richardson had an excellent evening in the paint, recording a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds—leading the entire field in defense. Trey DeLoach recorded 11 points and Andrew Okorodudu added 10 of his own in the loss.

The Tigers continue their non-conference schedule on Monday with a visit to College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, Georgia. They play their first home game on Saturday, Nov. 27 against Claflin University. Saturday's doubleheader will feature the Lady Tigers at 1 p.m. and the Tigers at 3 p.m.
