Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saint Leo Spoils Tigers' Season Opener

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Savannah State men's basketball opened their 2021 schedule on Tuesday with a road game at NCAA Division II perennial basketball powerhouse St. Leo University.

The Tigers were thwarted by the sharpshooting Lions who managed a 54.9 percent clip from the floor and a 52.0 percent 3-point average, dropping in 107 points to the Tigers' 67.

Savannah State opened with a strong run. At the 19:23 mark, Trey DeLoach dropped a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead. By the first media timeout, Savannah State trailed by a single point, 6-7. Out of the timeout, however, the Lions opened an 8-3 run capped at the 12:34 mark with a 3-pointer from Francis Sio.

But Christian Blue responded with his own long-ball to cut the home team's lead to 14-13 with 11 minutes to play. And Marcus Scott added a field goal to give Savannah State a 15-14 lead.

Later in the first half, the Lions opened a 16-0 run behind four three-pointers, a field goal and a few good free-throws for a 39-22 lead with four minutes to play. By the final media timeout, the Lions led 43-24. They would head into the locker room with a 23-point lead (49-26).

Savannah State was unable to answer St. Leo's big run in the second half. Midway through the second 20 minutes, they were down by as much as 45 points. Down the final stretch, they were able to cut into the Lions' lead a little, but not enough to matter as the home team sealed up the 40-point win.

Scott led the Tigers with 21 points on the night, while DeLoach added 20 of his own. Daryl Richardson dropped in 11 for the Tigers and Andrew Okorodudu led the entire field in defense with 13 rebounds.

Savannah State returns to action with another road game on Nov. 20. They face Lander University in Greenville, S.C. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. Following a third road game on Nov. 22 at College of Coastal Georgia, the Tigers play their first home game on Nov. 27 against Claflin. Tip-off in Tiger Arena is set for 3 p.m. Tickets are now on sale.
