Lady Tigers Fall To Edward Waters

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State dropped a non-conference match with Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) provisional member Edward Waters on Wednesday night in Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers fall to 9-10 on the season but their 5-6 SIAC mark remains untarnished as they move into the final few games of the season.

Wednesday's match was the first between the programs since 2009 when Savannah State blanked the Jacksonville, Florida team twice. But the 2021 Edward Waters volleyball team is a different beas. They came into Wednesday's match on a 9-1 win streak with an overall record of 16-7.

The first set was all Edward Waters as they cruised to a 25-9 win and a 1-0 lead. Saldy Amparo Smith led the charge for the visitors with four kills in the opening set.

But into the second set, it was clear early on Savannah State had adjusted to the fierce offensive effort from the visitors. The Lady Tigers pushed out to a 7-3 lead on a kill from Destinee Langston. Smith fired back with a kill for Edward Waters, but the momentum had shifted.

The Lady Tigers took advantage with a 4-1 run for an 11-5 lead on three Edward Waters errors and a service ace from Sydney Harville.

Edward Waters then answered the Lady Tigers lead with 6-1 run that tied the third set at 12 all. Savannah State quickly regained the lead on a kill from Williamson and held on to it through several points with Edward Waters never far behind them.

On an error from the visitors, Savannah State pushed out to a 22-19 lead and made quick work of the final few points on kills from Jasmine Nettles, and Langston to win the second set 25-21 and tie the match at 1-1.

Following the back and forth of the second set, Savannah State came out firing in the third set with a quick 2-0 lead but Edward Waters put on a 5-0 run for a lead they would not relinquish. Despite a small rally in the final points, the Lady Tigers fell 25-22 in the third set.

Into the fourth set, the Lady Tigers led early on, but Smith laid down a kill to tie the set at 6 all and open a little run for Edward Waters. The visitors pushed out to a lead and held onto it down the stretch.

The Lady Tigers attempted a late rally. Down 21-15, they managed a 4-2 run to cut into Edward Waters' lead. But the rally fell short as Edward Waters put down the final point on a kill from Smith to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Savannah State will get a quick rematch with Edward Waters when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. on Nov. 1. First serve on Monday is set for 6 p.m. The Lady Tigers return home on Nov. 5 for another non-conference match against SIAC provisional team Allen University.
