Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lady Tigers Fall To Benedict SIAC Match

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State women's volleyball returned to action on Wednesday night with a key road matchup against Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division rival Benedict College.

The Lady Tigers played Benedict in two spring games earlier this year following the cancellation of their fall 2020 season. Savannah State won both matches. The Benedict Tigers remembered those losses on Wednesday, beating Savannah State in straight sets, 3-0.

Benedict came out blazing in the opening set behind a 10-4 run that forced the Lady Tigers into a timeout. Savannah State was unable to recovery from the early onslaught. They did manage a couple of three-point runs, but it was mostly Benedict coming away with the points after each serve.

Cana Smith solidified the first set win for Benedict with seven consecutive serves for points, lifting Benedict to a 25-13 win. The second set opened with a 17-4 run for Benedict, firmly in control at this point. Savannah State dropped the second set 15-25.

Into the final set, the Lady Tigers attempted a rally, down 0-2. They held with Benedict for the opening points. Imani Williamson lifted SSU to a 16-15 lead on a kill. But Benedict earned three consecutive points behind two SSU errors and a kill for an 18-16 lead, forcing the Lady Tigers into a timeout.

Still battling down the stretch, the Lady Tigers traded points with the Benedict Tigers, keeping it within three. Senior Jedaiah Daniels cut Benedict's lead to 22-20 on a kill, but Benedict answered on the next serve with a kill. Smith secured the 25-20 set and 3-0 match win for Benedict with back-to-back kills to end the game.

Savannah State falls to 7-8 on the season with the loss and 4-6 in SIAC action. The Lady Tigers are currently in fourth place in the standings. They trail Clark Atlanta (6-4), Benedict (6-3) and first place Albany State (7-3) as they race towards the November SIAC Volleyball Championship.

Savannah State will get a quick rematch with Benedict as they host the rival on Oct. 19. But they have another key SIAC East Division matchup before that one as they take on Clark Atlanta on Oct. 15 in Wilcox-Willey Gym. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports.
