SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State swept visiting Morris College (Sumter, S.C.) in dominating fashion this weekend.
Â
The Tigers won all three non-conference contests at Tiger Field by a combined score of 67-8.Â
Â
The fun started for head coach
Carlton Hardy's club as SSU plated 13 first inning runs in game one, eventually taking care of the Hornets 27-4 before game two's nine-run first led to another lopsided Tiger victory in Friday's doubleheader, 28-3.
Â
Saturday's early morning series finale ended with SSU taking care of business once again, this time to the tune of 12-1 in the "Orange Out" game. The Tigers scored six in the first frame, giving them 28 first inning runs across the three-game set.
Â
In Friday's doubleheader, SSU rattled off 24 hits in total before tallying 10 more knocks Saturday for a cool 34 on the weekend.Â
Â
Luis Torres-Lopez (1-1) was solid on the mound to guide the Tigers in game one and earn the win. The lefty began by striking out the first two Hornet batters of the game and eventually ended with six punchouts across four innings of work.
Â
He allowed four unearned runs, scattering six hits while walking none and would also go on to strike out two more in a one-inning relief shutout outing Saturday.
Â
Outfielder, and usual lead-off man at the top of the lineup,
Darius Sewell was a spark for the offense over the weekend. Sewell was 3-for-5 with four walks in the series. He walked four times and was hit by a pitch. He totaled nine runs scores, four batted in, a stolen base and a home run.
Â
The scoring explosion from the Tigers was aided by control issues from Hornet pitchers in all three games. SSU took advantage. Savannah State accepted 40 walks in the series. Only six Tigers were victims of strikeouts over the series.
Â
Savannah State returns to action next when the Tigers welcome Voorhees College (S.C.) for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4.
