Tigers drop three-game series to Embry Riddle

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State dropped a three-game, non-conference series to Embry Riddle this weekend at Tiger Field.
 
The Tigers faced some good pitching and decent hitting from the Eagles, and struggled to score runs throughout the series. Embry Riddle opened the three games on Friday with a 9-0 shutout behind an outstanding 9.0 inning effort from pitcher Garrett Goodall. Goodall allowed no runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk.
 
Savannah State starting pitcher Luis Torres-Lopez pitched a full 7.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk. At the plate, Savannah State was led by a trio at the top of the batting order. Joey Roberson, Darius Sewell and Andrai Wright each went 2-for-4 on the day.
 
In game two of the series, the first of a doubleheader on Saturday, Savannah State had a number of chances to earn their second win of the season. Embry Riddle opened the game with two runs in the first inning. The Tigers answered in the third.
 
Roberson singled to reach and Sewell walked. Luis Lamarche reached on an error to score Roberson and push Sewell into scoring position. Wright singled to third, scoring Sewell. Turner Davis hit into a double play that caught Wright but scored Lamarche. SSU took a 3-2 lead, their first and only lead of the series.
 
After two scoreless innings, Embry Riddle tied the game up in the top of the sixth inning. The Tigers put runners on in the bottom of the frame, but failed to score. After scoreless seventh and eighth innings, Embry Riddle broke the tie in the ninth. The Eagles platted three runs on one hit and one error. The 6-3 score held through the bottom of the frame as Embry Riddle sealed up their second win of the series.
 
In the final game—game two of Saturday's doubleheader—Kelsey Ward pitched a strong game for the visitors, allowing no runs on only three hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, the Eagles racked up 11 hits, scoring 10 runs for a 10-0 shutout of the Tigers.
 
Sewell, Lamarche and Christian Harkey each had hits for Savannah State in the loss. Enrico Peele was tagged with the loss after 4.0 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
 
The Tigers Feb. 18, non-conference road game was postponed due to inclement weather that flooded Georgia College's field. Savannah State returns to action on Feb. 21 and 22 with another three-game, non-conference series against Morris College.
