Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers upend top dog Albany State, 69-59

SAVANNAH, Ga. – After falling to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division leaders Albany State on Feb. 1 (57-72), Savannah State men's basketball shocked the top-dog in Tiger Arena on Monday with solid beating.

After a six-game losing streak early in the season, the Tigers seemed to be on a new level as a team, winning six of their last eight games. They improved to 7-10 on the season and 7-7 in SIAC action. Currently, SSU is tied for third in the SIAC East Division.

They trail Albany State and Clark Atlanta and are tied with Morehouse. They both beat and lost games against Albany State and Morehouse. They will see Clark Atlanta one more time this season, after handing them a surprise loss in Atlanta earlier this season.

On Monday, the Tigers put on a shooting clinic for a home crowd of over a 1,000. They went 24-for-58 from the floor, and 10-for-22 from beyond the arc. Leading the stats was freshman Marcus Scott who put up 18 points. The Hinesville, Ga. native is averaging 15.8 points a game and has been key to SSU's offensive strategy in the last few wins.

Trey DeLoach followed Scott in the stats with 14 points and Avery Joyner tacked on 13 points, going 5-for-7 from the field. Andrew Okorodudu led the field in rebounds with 12 and in blocks with four in one of his best defensive efforts of the season.

The opening half was a back-and forth between Albany State and Savannah State, but the Tigers broke free late with five consecutive points from scoring machine Scott—referred to by his teammates as "Media Man." SSU led 41-34 at the half.

The Tigers opened the second half by pushing out to a double-digit lead behind a good free-throw from Joe Boykin—who doubled at Savannah State this year as a wide receiver for the football program.

It was all Savannah Stare in the final four minutes of the game, as the Tigers held the Golden Rams to on only three points, sealing up the double-digit win.

Savannah State hits the road for three key SIAC games. They face Miles College on Feb. 12, Paine College on Feb. 15 and Benedict College on Feb. 17. They return home on Feb. 20 and 22 for the final two home games of the season against Clark Atlanta and Fort Valley State, respectively.

The SIAC Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 2-7 in Rock Hill, S.C.
