Tigers fall to West Georgia in three-game series

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Savannah State baseball faced some strong pitching in a three-game series with the University of West Georgia this weekend, dropping all three road game.
 
The Tigers fell 6-9 in the opening game on Saturday. They fell 6-9 in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday and 13-2 in the second game. SSU is 1-4 on the season.
 
In the opening game on Saturday, Savannah State was led at the plate by Luis Lamarche and Champion Robbins who each had two hits and two RBI as the Tigers spread out 10 hits over the nine-inning game.
 
They led West Georgia 5-4 into the seventh inning, but the Wolves broke loose, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the lead. West Georgia spread out 11 hits on the day.
 
Freshman Matthew Henderson was tagged with the pitching loss in the opening game, with two earned runs on two hits over a half an inning of work. SSU opener Luis Torres-Lopez pitched a full 6.0 innings, allowed three earned runs (three unearned) on eight hits with two strikeouts.
 
Three West Georgia pitchers combined for a total of 12 strikeouts in the win. Cory Bartholomew earned the pitching win after two innings of work. He had five strikeouts, allowing no runs and no hits.  
 
In the second game, SSU broke out to 4-1 lead in the third with four runs on three hits, but West Georgia fired back for the lead in the bottom frame, putting up three more runs. SSU answered with single run in the top of the fourth, but West Georgia again put up three in the bottom frame for a 7-5 lead.
 
The Wolves held onto that lead putting up two more runs. They spread out eight hits over the nine-innings. The Tigers put up seven hits with Georgia State transfer Darius Sewell leading with three hits and three RBI in his best outing this season.
 
Newcomer Jackson Hickox was nabbed with the pitching loss for SSU after 3.1 innings on the mound. He allowed two earned runs (four unearned) on six hits with three strikeouts. Robert Coleman earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
 
The Wolves took over the second game of the doubleheader, spreading out 13 runs on 14 hits as SSU dug deep into the bullpen. The Tigers showed five pitchers on the day to West Georgia's Ryan Parker—who earned his second win of the season after 7.0 innings, nine strikeouts, one earned run on five hits.
 
Savannah State returns to Tiger Field on Friday and Saturday with a three-game, non-conference series against Embry-Riddle. First pitch on Friday is set for 4 p.m.
