Tigers Lose Double-header To Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va.- Savannah State went on the road for the first time this season and suffered a double-header loss to Norfolk State at Miller Field. The Spartans won the opener 5-2 and completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory in the second game.
In the first game, Turner Davis led off the fourth inning with a solo home run over the left field fence to put Savannah State out in front 1-0.
NSU answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and added another run in the fifth for a 4-1 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Trevor Meany doubled to left field and scored on a single by Jalen Atterbury to cut the Tigers deficit to 4-2 but Norfolk State sent a runner across home plate in the eighth for the final score of the contest.
Savannah State left seven runners on base while getting seven hits and making one error.
Atterbury had three hits for Savannah State while Luis Torres-Lopez was tagged with the loss. Torrez-Lopez pitched seven innings and struck out four while giving up six hits, four runs and one walk.
The Spartans collected eight hits, made one error and left three runners on base.
Stephen Baughan had three hits and drove in two runs for NSU. Chase Anderson struck out 12 in eight innings to earn the win while Trey Hanchey got the save.
In the second game, Norfolk State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but Savannah State tied the game in the third when Meany reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop and scored on a ground-out by Justin Washington.
The Spartans added four runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a three-run double by Seth Hockett for a 5-1 edge.
Meany had a RBI single in the fourth that scored Garrett Bogart but Norfolk State scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning for a 6-2 advantage.
Savannah State (2-6-1) scored two runs off three hits in the top of the fifth inning.
Joeseph Roberson doubled and scored on a double by Luis Lamarchel. Austin Adams reached base because of an error by the shortstop which in turn allowed Lamarchel to cross home plate for the final run of the day.
SSU had eight hits, made one error and left eight men on base.
Atterbury, Lamarchel and Bogart all had two hits apiece for the Tigers. Caleb Hill went 2.2 innings on the mound and gave up four hits, five runs and two walks while striking out three to take the loss.
The Spartans (2-10) had six hits, made three errors and left seven men on base.
Hockett drove in three runs and Ridge Walker struck out two batters while giving up eight hits, four runs and three walks to get awarded with the win.
