NORFOLK, Va.- Savannah State had a season-high 12 hits but stranded 13 men on base in a 10-7 loss to Norfolk State in a game played at Miller Field.
With the win, NSU completes the three-game weekend series over the Tigers.
Savannah State left the bases loaded in the first inning but was only able to score once.
Jalen Atterbury led off with a single through the left side of the infield, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Spartans catcher. A single up the middle by
Luis Lamarchel allowed Atterbury to score for a 1-0 lead.
Norfolk State tied the game in the bottom half of the first and then scored three times in the second and once more in the third for a 5-1 lead.
Taylor Wilkinson led off the top of the fourth with a single and scored on a ground-out by Atterbury to get t Tigers within 5-2 but Norfolk State scored a run of their own in the fourth to keep their four-run gap at 6-2.
Atterbury doubled in he sixth that allowed
Dwayne Franklin to score and then the Tigers sent four runners across home plate in the top of the eighth as Atterbury hit a two-run single, Lamarchel hit a RBI single and Garret Bogart's sacrifice fly allowing Joseph Roberson to score to put SSU ahead 7-6.
Norfolk State left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth but not before they allowed four runners to score for a 10-7 lead.
Atterbury singled and stole second for Savannah State (2-7-1) in the ninth but the Tigers could not generate any more runs.
Atterbury went 4 for 6 at the plate with 4 RBI while scoring twice. Lamarchel had two hits and drove in a pair of runs while Bogart had two hits and Franklin scored twice.
Roberson, who was one of five SSU pitchers to take the mound, was tagged with the loss. Roberson pitched a third of a inning and surrendered three hits, three runs and one walk.
Hayes had four hits and scored twice foe NSU. Trey Hanchey was the game winner, pitching two innings and giving up no hits or runs.
Norfolk State (3-10) had 15 hits, made two errors and left ten men on base.
