Savannah State Sweeps NCCU, 5-3

SAVANNAH, Ga.- With the game tied at 3-3, Savannah State scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning and went on to defeat North Carolina Central 5-3 in a game played at Tiger Field.

The win evens SSU's conference record at 3-3 while they improve to 5-12-1 overall.

Following Dwayne Franklin's fly-out to start the bottom of the seventh, Yan Mastin drew a walk and Jalen Atterbury singled to put runners on first and second. A single by Joey Roberson sent Mastin home and Atterbury scored on a fielder's choice by Luis Lamarchel for a 5-3 lead.

North Carolina Central had runners on base in the eighth and ninth innings but did not threaten to score.

In the first inning, Atterbury scored following a single by Lamarchel for a 1-0 lead but  NCCU went ahead 3-1 in the third by sending three runners across home plate.

The Tigers collected three hits in the fourth and had two runners to score. Lamarchel led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Turner Davis.Lamarchel scored on a single by Justin Washington and a ground-out by Cooper Morgan allowed Davis to tie the game at 3-3.

Atterbury, Roberson and Lamarchel all had two hits apiece for the Tigers. Atterbury scored twice and Lamarchel had two RBI.

Ian Concevitch started for the Tigers and pitched 2.2 innings before being relieved by Tyler Robison and Matthew Shunk. Concevitch gave up three runs while Robinson, who was the game-winner, surrendered three hits and one walk in his 5.1 innings. Shunk earned the save, pitching one inning and not allowing a hit,run or walk.

Savannah State, who swept the weekend series with NCCU, ended the contest with nine hits and one error while leaving seven runners on base.


Vinny Bailey drove in two runs for the Eagles (9-15,3-6 MEAC). Ryan Miller took the loss, giving up six hits, four runs and three walks in 6.1 innings. Miller also struck out six.

NCCU had six hits and left nine men on base.
