DOVER, Del.- With Savannah State trailing by three,
Collins Joseph hit back-to-back three pointers to help the Tigers defeat Delaware State 76-73 in a game played at Memorial Hall.
Delaware State led 64-61 with just under five minutes remaining when Joseph nailed consecutive 3-pointers to give the Tigers a 67-65 lead at the 3:02 mark.Â
Zach Sellers added a pair of free throws to push the SSU (6-15, 3-4 MEAC) lead to 69-65 with 1:38 showing.
The Hornets got as close as 74-73 with one second remaining but two free throws by Joseph sealed the win for Savannah State, with no time left.
Joseph had 17 points while Qua Smith added 15 and
Tyrell Harper chipped in ten and seven rebounds.
In a game that featured ten ties, DSU led 28-20 with 6:44 left in the first half before the Tigers finished the period with a 16-5 spurt as Smith hit two 3-pointers, Joseph hit a 3-pointer, Harper scored three points and Andrew Okorodudu made a pair of layups to take a 36-33 lead at intermission.
Savannah State's bench players outscored the Hornet reserves 23-3 in the opening period.
Delaware State hit a 3-pointer to start the second half to tie the game and the Hornets were able to go ahead 49-44 with 12:21 left.
The Hornets were ahead 62-57 with 6:11 remaining when SSU rallied to tie the game at 64 with 3:52 left after a 3-pointer by Joseph.
Savannah State shot 43.5 percent from the floor in the second half and 39.3 percent for the game. The Tigers made nine 3-pointers and shot 76.7 percent from the free throw line.
All five DSU (3-18, 0-8 MEAC) starters were in double figures with Ameer Bennett getting 19 points.
Delaware State, who out-rebounded the Tigers 43 to 36, shot 37.3 percent from the field, 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 76.2 percent from the free throw line.
