Sellers Scores 19 In Win Over UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- Zach Sellers scored a game-high 19 points to lead Savannah State to a 68-63 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in a game played at the W. P. Hytche Athletic Center.
 
The junior guard made 6 of 11 shots from the floor, 4 of 5 free throw attempts and made three 3-pointers while getting four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
A 3-pointer by Jahlin Smith gave the Tigers a 10-point cushion with just under five minutes remaining in the game but UMES mounted a 11-3 run that sliced the Savannah State lead to 65-63 with 12 seconds left.
 
SSU (7-15, 4-4 MEAC)  answered with two free throws by Sellers and another one by Jaquan Dotson to end the game and claim their third win in four games.
 
Qua Smith had 15 points for the Tigers, Romani Hansen scored 11 and Dotson grabbed 12 rebounds.
 
The first half featured four ties and was nip and tuck throughout.
 
The score was tied at 21 with 4:09 left but Savannah State strung together a 8-3 spurt to go ahead 29-24 with ten seconds remaining. Maryland-Eastern finished the half with a 3-pointer by Ahmad Frost and a layup by Colen Gaynor at the buzzer to tie the game at 29.
 
The second half was just as tight.
 
Leading 49-48 with 10:21 showing on the clock, Savannah State got some separation with a 13-4 run that put them ahead 62-52 with 4:52 left.
 
The Tigers ended the contest shooting 39.7 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the free throw line.
 
Savannah State also won the rebounding battle, 40 to 33.
 
Bryan Urrutia led UMES with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
 
The Hawks (4-21, 2-8 MEAC) shot 42.6 percent from the floor, made 31.3 percent of their 3-pointers and went 12 for 17 from the free throw line.

*  Zach Sellers extended his streak of scoring at least two points in a game to 53 games
 
* The Tigers beat Maryland-Eastern Shore for the fourth time in a row
 
* SSU's largest lead of the game came with just under five minutes left in the second period
 
* Tyrell Harper (138), Jaquan Dotson (139) and Romani Hansen (120) each have over 100 rebounds on the season.
 
* UMES head coach Cliff Reed and UMES assistant coach Raheem Waller are both former assistant coaches at SSU.
