SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State baseball team opened their 2019 season with a double-header against Coppin State at Tiger Field.

SSU fell in both games, losing 8-7 in the opener and 10-8 in the nightcap.

In the first contest, the Tigers struck first in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs,
Austin Adams was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third and scored due to a throwing error following a single by
Cooper Morgan.

Coppin State tied the game in the third inning on a solo home run by Drew Thomas. The Eagles would add five runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 6-1.

SSU responded with six runs in the bottom of the sixth with
Turner Davis,
Christian Harkey, Adams,
Justin Washington,
Taylor Wilkinson and
Jalen Atterbury crossing home plate for a 7-6 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, the Eagles would score two runs off three hits to earn the win.
Â
The Tigers would end the game with nine hits while committing two errors.
Â
Cooper would finish with two hits, Adams would score twice and Atterbury would drive in two runs.
Â
Luis Torres-Lopez would pitch 5.1 innings and strike out four for the Tigers but it would be reliever Joseph Roberson who would take the loss.In his one inning, Roberson gave up three hits and one run while striking out one.

Coppin State would collect 12 hits while making four errors.
Â
Corey Treyes and Conner Walker both had doubles for CSU. Treyes would also be the winning pitcher, striking out four in two innings while giving up three hits and two runs.

Coppin State left seven runners on base while SSU left six runners.
Â
In the second game, the Eagles would score once in the second inning and three times in the third for a 4-0 lead.

Savannah State would answer in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs off three hits as Washington,
Trevor Meaney, Atterbury, Roberson and
Luis Lamarche all driving in runs.
Â
CSU would go ahead 8-7 with four runs in the top of the fifth and increase it to 10-7 in the sixth.
Â
The Tigers could only manage one run in the bottom of the sixth. Atterbury led off with a double and advanced to third on a ground-out by Roberson. Atterbury scored on a ground-out by Lamarche for the final run.

Savannah State (0-2) would get seven hits but make three errors and leave eight men on base.
Â
Caleb Hill would get tagged with the loss. Hill pitched 4.1 innings and gave up six hits, eight runs and four walks while recording four strikeouts.

Atterbury had two hits and scored twice while Lamarche would drive in two runs.
Â
Coppin State (2-0) was led at the plate by Marcos Castillo who doubled and scored three times and drove in two runs. Jonathan Rye was the game-winner while Treyes earned the save. Rye struck out five in 2.2 innings and Treyes struck out one in his one inning.

The Eagles had nine hits, made fiver errors and stranded five base runners.
