CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Savannah State women's Cross Country team finished runner-up in the 2019 Charleston Classic on Saturday, while
Abbas Abbkar finished second overall for the Tigers in the men's competition.
The Lady Tigers finished with a team score of 1:51:23, trailing the College of Charleston (1:35:31) in the 5k. Junior Karen Perez led the Lady Tigers, finishing 13
th with a time of 21:10.88, averaging 6:48 a mile.
Freshman Kayla Chance followed with time of 21:23:79, followed by freshman Simone Johnson (21:29.72), freshman Christy Turner (22:36.88), freshman Jasmine Williams (24:41.26) and freshman Jonica Hill (26:10.28).
The Savannah State men's Cross Country team finished third overall in the 8k. Abbkar ran a 27:02.34, averaging 5:26 a mile. He was bested by College of Charleston's Hayden Dibona who finished with a time of 26:28.
The College of Charleston men's team finished first with a time of 2:16:11. The Tigers ran a 2:29.02 for their third place finish, trailing former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival South Carolina State, who ran a 2:27.48.
Senior
Sahlu Atakilti finished 11
th overall for the Tigers with a time of 28:49.04, followed by junior Suhieb Mohamed in 12
th with a time of 28:53.18, freshman Djangmah Nartmartey (32:06.83) and freshman
Erik Roberts (32:10.18).
The Savannah State men's and women's Cross Country teams return to action on Oct. 19 at the USCB Sand Shark Invitational in Bluffton, S.C.
