Tigers Fall to FAMU in MEAC Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Bishop Bonnett scored two touchdowns to lead Florida A&M to a 31-13 victory over Savannah State, in a game played at Bragg Stadium.

The crowd of 16,644 saw the Tigers offense out-gain FAMU 316 to 301 and control the clock (33:45 to 26:15).

A interception by Vanquez Bonner led to SSU's first touchdown of the night.

Bonner picked off a Ryan Stanley pass at the FAMU 40 and returned it 12 yards to the Rattlers 28 yard line. From there it took Savannah State five plays to score as JaMichael Baldwin scored on a four yard run with 9:15 left in the first quarter. Giovanni Lugo kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

A pair of SSU turnovers resulted in three points for Florida A&M in the second quarter.

SSU's TJ Bell threw a interception with 8:25 left in the quarter which gave the Rattlers a first down at their own 41. FAMU failed to take advantage of the opportunity and had to punt.

The Tigers took over but could not advance the ball and was forced to punt. However, Lugo's punt was blocked by Jalene Douse and FAMU had a first down at the SSU 40. The Rattlers moved the ball to the SSU ten and had to settle on a 27 yard field goal by Yahia Aly with 2:11 left in the second quarter to make the score 7-3.

Late in the quarter, John Wilson intercepted a pass for the SSU defense at the Tigers 13. Savannah State ran out the clock and went into the half with a four point lead.

The Rattlers scored on two of their three possessions in the third quarter to go ahead 17-7 as Bonnett scored on a 69 yard reception from Stanley with 6:51 on the clock and Deshawn Smith scored on a one yard run with 2:51 showing.

FAMU, who now leads the overall series  with Savannah State 10-1, scored twice in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Azende Rey scored on a four yard run with just under 12 minutes remaining in the contest for a 24-7 advantage.

The Tigers answered by capping a 11-play, 85 yard drive with a two yard touchdown run by Jaylen McCloud with 6:31 left to cut their deficit to 27-13.

A nine yard touchdown run by Bonnett with 5:39 remaining gave FAMU a 31-13 lead for the final score of the game.

Quarterback D'Vonn Gibbons ran for 76 yards for the Tigers while Bell passed for 88 yards and D'Andre Snead caught three passes for 19 yards.

Mulik Simmons paced the defense with seven tackles while Cam Brown had two sacks.

Savannah State (0-3, 0-1 MEAC) hurt themselves with 16 penalties for 162 yards.

Bonnett led the Rattlers with 89 rushing yards while Stanley passed for 166 yards. Xavier Smith had five receptions for 47 yards. Elijah Richardson had 11 tackles for the defense.

FAMU (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) had 12 penalties for 92 yards.
