TAMPA, Fla. – Sophomore
Abbas Abbkar of the Savannah State University men's track team set his own school record and narrowly missed out on advancing at the National Collegiate Athletics Association East Preliminary round at the USF Track & Field Stadium Thursday.
Abbkar finished the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.73 beating his previous best of 1:49.75 set at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship on May 5.
The top-24 times advance with the top-three of each of the six heats and the next sixth fastest time advanced to the semifinals Friday.
Abbkar's time was the 27
th fastest time, missing out on the 24
th place time of 0.01 seconds. Ian Jones of Kentucky got the final spot with a 1:49.72.
Each of the top three advance of the each heat and Abbkar finished fourth in the first heat, while Bashir Mosavel-lo of Virginia Tech finished third heat with a time of 1:49.72, also missing out advancing by 0.01 seconds.
