Savannah State Loses To NCCU

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Playing their final home series of the season,Savannah State dropped a double-header to North Carolina Central 15-5 and 3-2 in games played at Tiger Field.

Freshman catcher Garrett Bogart finished the day with four hits and two runs batted in.

The losses extended the Tigers losing streak to 14 games which matches the 1984 squad.

In the first game, the Eagles raced out to a 4-0 lead scoring three runs in the first inning and another in the top of the fourth.

SSU sliced their deficit to 8-5 after five innings of play but North Carolina Central added a run in the sixth, four more in the seventh and two more in the eighth to earn the ten run victory.

Khalyd Cox led off the third for the Tigers with a double and scored on a ground-out by Freddie Landers. In the fourth, Juan Lugo tripled and scored on a single by Turner Davis. Davis scored when Bogart hit a home run over he left field fence to cut NCCU's lead to 6-4. Landers led off the fifth with a double to left field. He advanced to third base on a ground out by Kyle Gerdts and scored on an error by the first baseman to make the score 8-5.

Bogart had three hits in the game including a home run, double and a single while Cox and Landers had doubles and Lugo hit a triple.

Trevor McKenna took the loss on the mound. McKenna pitched five innings and struck out four as he gave up 11 hits, eight runs and two walks.

SSU ended the game with 11 hits, made three errors and left eight men on base.

Corey Joyce and Zach Michalski hit home runs for the Eagles while Devin Sweet was the winning pitcher. Sweet struck out four in six innings and gave up 10 hits, five runs and one walk.

NCCU had 19 hits, made one error and left ten runners on base.

The second game was much closer than the first one.

The Eagles scored all of their runs in the first inning as Andrew Valichka hit a two run single and scored on a single by Dominic Cuevas for a 3-0 lead.

Savannah State (5-28, 2-15 MEAC) scored a run in the bottom of the first and tacked on another run in the fifth.

Mason Calloway led off the bottom of the first with a walk and scored on a single by Bryce Luken. In the fifth, Lugo doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a ground-out by Bogart. Lugo scored the Tigers final run on a ground-out by Calloway.

SSU was held to three hits in the game. Bogart and Luken hit singles while Lugo had a double. Alex Wright went the distance on the mound, striking out nine batters and giving up seven hit, three runs and three walks.

Valichka had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for NCCU. Chris Kernen was the winning pitcher while Justice Sampson earned the save. Kernen struck out four in five innings while surrendering three hits, two runs and a walk while Sampson struck out the side in his only inning on the mound.

NCCU (25-21, 9-11 MEAC) left eight runners on base while Savannah State left three on the basepads.
