FAMU Defeats Savannah State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla- Willis McDaniel hit two home runs to lead Florida A&M to a double-header sweep of Savannah State in games played at Moore-Kittles Field.

McDaniel hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Rattlers a 9-8 win in the first game and hit a two-run homer in the third inning in a 5-2 victory in the second game.

The losses extend the Savannah State losing streak to ten games.

The Tigers led 4-0 in the first game after two and a half innings of play with Freddie Landers hitting a two run home run in the first inning. Landers singled in the third inning and made his way to third on a double by Kyle Gerdts. Landers scored on a ground out by Bryce Luken and Gerdts scored on a single by Jalen Atterbury. FAMU scored a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Landers hit a two-run single in the fourth inning to extend the Tigers lead to 6-1. 

FAMU scored four times off of two hits in the bottom of the inning to whittle their deficit to 6-5.

In the top of the seventh, Turner Davis doubled and Mason Calloway replaced him as a pinch-runner. Calloway stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Atterbury singled up the middle and stole second. He scored after a single by Marcus Mitchell to give SSU a 8-5 advantage.

The Ratters pulled within 8-7 in the bottom of the inning after McDaniel hit a two-run single.

Curtis Jordon hit a solo home run for FAMU in the eighth to tie the game and McDaniel's solo shot down the left field line proved to be the game winner.

Landers paced Savannah State with four RBI, three hits and two runs scored. Khalyd Cox, Gerdts, Atterbury and Mitchell all had two hits for the Tigers.

Paul Sheffield was the losing pitcher. Sheffield worked two innings and surrendered three hits and two runs.

SSU had 14 hits in the game and left eight men on base.

McDaniel and Curtis each drove in three runners for FAMU. Chandellor Benton was the winning pitcher. Benton pitched 2.2 innings and gave up two hits and no runs while striking out three.

Florida A&M ended the game with 11 hits and two errors while leaving nine runners on base.

In the second game, FAMU scored twice in the first inning but the Tigers(5-24, 2-11 MEAC) tied the game in the top of the second as Larry Silmon hit a two run single.

McDaniel's two run home run over the left field fence in the third put the Rattlers ahead to stay 4-2. FAMU added another run in the fourth for the final run of the day.

Savannah State pounded out 10 hits but left seven runners on base and made three errors.

Mitchell, Silmon, Juan Lugo and Noah Orlando all had two hits apiece for the Tigers. Alex Wright was tagged with the loss. Wright pitched three innings and gave up eight hits, five runs and three walks while recording two strikeouts.

The Rattlers (18-22, 11-5 MEAC) had eight hits in the game and made one error while leaving 10 men on base.

McDaniel drove in three runs while Ryan Anderson was the winning pitcher and Dylan Carlson earned the save. Anderson pitched 6.2 innings and gave up 10 hits, two runs and one walk while striking out two while Carlson went one third of an inning, striking out the only batter he faced.
