SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Freddie Landers and
Kyle Gerdts scored runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Savannah State snapped their seven game losing skid with a 3-2 win over Long Island Brooklyn, in a game played at Tiger Field.
The Tigers were down 2-1 entering the eighth inning.
Landers reached base thanks to an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gerdts walked and
Jalen Atterbury followed with a single to left field which allowed Landers to score and tie the game. Atterbury stole second and Gerdts crossed home plate because of an error by the catcher for the 3-2 lead.
The Blackbirds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a solo home run by Alex Briggs and extended it to 2-0 in the fourth.
Savannah State sliced their deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth when Atterbury walked and advanced all the way to third base because of an error by the pitcher. Atterbury scored when
Turner Davis singled to second.
LIU Brooklyn had the bases loaded in the top of the eighth but could not score.
SSU (3-8) finished the game with four hits and one error. The Tigers left seven men on base.
Atterbury, Davis,
Daryl Harper and
Noah Orlando all had hits for Savannah State.
Caleb Hill pitched seven innings for SSU and gave up five hits, two runs and four walks while striking out five. Tyler Robinson lasted one third of an inning, giving up three walks. Robinson was relieved by
Paul Sheffield who was awarded the win. Sheffield pitched 1.2Â hit less innings and struck out three.
The Blackbirds (4-6) had five hits and made three errors while leaving nine runners on base.
Briggs led the LIU offense with two hits, two RBI and one run scored. Cory Hart struck out six and surrendered four walks, two hits and one run in five innings. Baylor LaPointe was tagged with the loss. LaPointe pitched one inning and gave up two runs, one hit and one walk.
