SAVANNAH, Ga.- North Carolina A&T took advantage of Savannah State's error of the game and scored the game-winning run in the top of the 14th inning in a 3-2 win over the Tigers in a game played at Tiger Field.
SSU relief pitcher Paul Sheffield struck out the first two batters but AJ Hunt singled to the shortstop and then stole second base. Ryne Stanley reached base on an error by the third baseman. That error allowed Hunt to break the 2-2 tie.
Sheffield, who pitched five innings and struck out four while giving up two hits and one run, was tagged with the loss.
Trevor McKenna started the game on the hill for SSU. McKenna pitched nine innings and surrendered four hits, two runs and two walks while striking out three.
Hunt hit a RBI double in the top of the first inning to give the Aggies the early lead.
That 1-0 lead held up until the bottom of the seventh when Savannah State pushed (5-15,2-5 MEAC) two runs across home plate. Landers led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Mitchell. Both runners came home on a double by Luke for a 2-1 advantage.
A&T tied the game in the eighth inning and neither squad could score in the ninth which forced extra innings.
Landers had two hits for the Tigers while Luke drove in both SSU runs.
Savannah State would end the game with nine hits and one error while leaving eight runners on base.
Hunt and Greg White each had two hits for A&T while Josh Strikeleather earned the win. Strikeleather pitched seven innings in relief and struck out nine while giving up two hits and two walks.
The Aggies (11-14,3-4 MEAC) had six hits and left five runners on base.
