HAMPTON, Va.- Savannah State dropped their second game in a row after a 114-102 overtime loss to Hampton.
The game was tied at the end of regulation at 92 and the crowd of 4,511 saw the Pirates outscore SSU 22-10 in the extra period.
It was the ninth time this season that Savannah State scored at least 100 points, which matches the 1985-86 Tiger squad.
The first period featured three ties and five lead changes.
Hampton led by seven with 4:43 left but back to back 3-pointers by
Alante Fenner and
Jahir Cabeza and a layup by
Zach Sellers gave the Tigers a 38-37 edge with 3:34 left.
The Pirates led 50-45 at intermission.
Hampton led 65-60 early in the second half but Savannah State used a 23-7 run to grab their largest lead of the contest, 83-72, with 8:11 remaining. During the run, Cabeza accounted for 12 of those points, getting two layups, a dunk, a jumper, a 3-pointer and a free throw.
HU responded with a 15-3 spurt that tied the game with 3:41 left at 86.
The Pirates led 90-88 but a layup by Sellers with 2:15 left tied the game at 90. A jumper by Fenner with 37 seconds left put the Tigers ahead 92-90 but two free throws by Hampton's Malique Trent-Street with 28 seconds showing knotted the game at 92.
SSU (13-15, 10-3 MEAC) missed a pair of layups in the closing seconds which forced overtime.
In the extra five minutes of action, Hampton struck quickly as they opened up a 102-94 lead. A 3-pointer by Fenner with 59 seconds left got SSU within 106-102 but the Tigers would get no closer.
Cabeza fouled out of the game for Savannah State but not before scoring a career-high 20 points. The senior from Panama also had six rebounds. Sellers, who also fouled out, added 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds while Fenner had 18 points and eight rebounds and McClanahn chipped in 14 points.
The Tigers shot 41.3 percent from the floor, made 18 three-pointers and shot 66.7 percent from the free throw line.
Hampton (15-14, 10-4 MEAC) was led by Kalin Fisher's 37 points.
HU shot 50 percent from the floor, 15.8 percent from beyond the arc and 85.4 percent from the free throw line while out-rebounding the Tigers 51 to 50.
