Savannah, Ga. --
The Savannah State University men's and women's basketball teams will play exhibition games to start the 2018-19 regular season on Nov. 1st with the men hosting Thomas University, while the women play Allen University at Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers tip off at 5:30 p.m. while the Tigers will play approximately at 7:30 p.m.

A year after Horace Broadnax saw his team win a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season title with Bethune-Cookman and Hampton, the Savannah State men's basketball team is in rebuilding mode in what will be their last season of competition at the Division I level.

As a team, the Tigers finished last season leading Division I in three point field goals made per game (12.2) and three point field goals attempted (1,304). SSU was second in the nation in scoring (86.1 points per game), third in made three pointers (392), fourth in steals per game (9.4) and fifth in total steals (301).

The Tigers are facing a significant overhaul of the roster after graduating five players and having another seven elect to leave the program following the 2017-18 season.

Savannah State does return Zach Sellers, Jahlin Smith, John Grant and Chris Dubose while welcoming seven newcomers to the squad. Broadnax will count on Sellers, who averaged10.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game a year ago.

Newcomers to the team include junior college transfers Tyrel Harper, Zaquavian Smith, Romani Hansen, Adam Saeed, Jaquan Dotson and Amaru Bryant. Broadnax also brought in Collins Joseph, a true freshman from the Virgin Islands.

The regular season begins on November 7 at Texas A&M.

The 2018-19 version of the Savannah State women's basketball squad will also be in rebuilding mode.

With just one senior on the roster, Cedric Baker enters his 16th year as head coach of the Lady Tigers with just one full-time starter from last season's team that posted a 5-25 record.

Sophomore Alexxus Sowell started 24 of the 29 games she played in last year. The 6-foot-3 center averaged 4.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game a year ago  while shooting 41 percent from the floor.

Also back are guards Heniaya Moton and Praise Russell and forwards Jalea Gray and Cortney Williams.

Baker brought in ten new players during the off-season. Among the newcomers are Jacquece Alston, Ja'Brekia Bass, Robbi Allen, Ta'Quasia Lampkin, Azhana Maxwell, Myasia Jones, Le'Andrea Gillis, Alexus Bryant and twins Deneesha and Mineesha Wallace.

The Lady Tigers start their regular season with a four-game homestand with Wesleyan (Nov 6), Carver (Nov 12), Georgia Southern (Nov 15) and Jacksonville (Nov 19).
