Savannah, Ga. -- · Savannah State University men's basketball team opens its conference schedule against Coppin State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
 
Tiger Bites
· This is the sixth of seven consecutive road games for the Tigers. SSU is still looking for their 1st true road win of the season. The Tigers are 0-8 in road games and 1-1 in games played at a neutral site. SSU last road win was Feb. 27 against defending Champs, NCCU.

· The Tigers are 3-3 in conference openers since entering the MEAC in 2011-12. The Tigers have met Coppin in two of those openers with each team winning one a piece.

· SSU leads the nation in three point attempts with 605. The Tigers are in the top 10 nationally in: steals per game (7th) averaging 10.1; three-point field goals per game (5th) averaging 11.8; total 3-pointers made (6th) with 177; total steals (6th) with 152; and turnovers forced (8th) averaging 18.53.

Notes:
TIGERS IN CONFERENCE
The Tigers lead the conference in total points scored with 1,166 and points per game with 77.7. Coppin State is 13th in the MEAC with 870 total points and 57.4 points per game. On the defensive end, Savannah State is No. 1 in the MEAC in total steals with 152 and 10.1 steals per game. The Eagles are 13th in that department with 76 total and 4.8 per game.

Horace Broadnax is the Dean of MEAC basketball coaches. He is in his 12th year at the helm of the SSU program
 
MOVING BACK DOWN
In April 2017, the Savannah State administration made the decision to move SSU athletics from Division I to Division II. The move will become effective following the 2018-19 season.
 
MCCLANAHAN LEADING SSU
Dexter McClanahan is 5th in the conference in three-point field goals made with 32 and is averaging 2.3 made threes per game. McClanahan is also 11th in the conference in scoring averaging 13.6 ppg.
 
TOUGH SCHEDULE
SSU's non-conference schedule features five teams that are ranked in the AP Top 25 poll (Michigan State, Wichita State, Cincinnati, Baylor and Texas A&M)
 
SIGHT SEEING
SSU will play games in 12 different states this season (Ohio, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Kansas, Georgia, Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and South Carolina).

WELCOME BACK
Javaris Jenkins, Alante Fenner and Khalen Pinkett return to the team after not being a part of the program last season.

HOME COURT SUCCESS
For the past 11 seasons, SSU has had a winning record when playing in Tiger Arena.

CONFERENCE CLASH
SSU will play teams from 11 different Division I conferences (MEAC, American, Southern, Sun Belt, Ohio Valley, SWAC, Big 12, Colonial, Southeastern, Atlantic Coast and Big 10).

SIGHT SEEING
SSU will play games in 12 different states this season (Ohio, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Kansas, Georgia, Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and South Carolina).

PERCENTAGE POINTS
SSU lost seven players from the 2016-17 squad. Those players made up 44 percent of the scoring and 35 percent of the rebounds.

GOOD MIXTURE
SSU's roster has a good mixture of veterans and newcomers. The Tigers roster has ten veterans  to go with six newcomers.

ROAD TRIP
SSU's shortest road trip this year is at Georgia Southern (54.9 miles) while the longest is at Texas Tech (1,374.3 miles)

MEMORY LANE
50 years ago the 1967-68 SSU team posted a 19-9 record, averaged 97.1 points and game and had five players finish the year averaging in double figures in scoring. The team scored at least 102 points in 13 games.
