Fuller and Gonzalez Named All-Tournament as Volleyball Drops Both Matches Saturday

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.  – Freshman middle blocker Oneilla Fuller and freshman setter Salma Gonzalez were named to the All-Tournament Team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North/South Challenge Saturday as Savannah State University volleyball team (2-12) dropped both matches to University of Maryland Eastern Shore (12-5) 3-0 (14-25, 21-25, 16-25) and to Hampton University (5-11) 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 16-25).
 
Over the weekend, Gonzalez led the team with 16 kills and added 31 assists and 17 digs, while Fuller added 11 kills with a .280 hitting percentage in three matches.
 
Fuller led the team on the day with 10 kills and with a .400 hitting percentage in two matches, while Gonzalez added nine kills, 16 assists and six digs.  Senior setter Alee Quint added led the team with 24 assists, while freshman outside hitter Brooke Sanford added six digs. 
 
Maryland Eastern Shore 3, Savannah State 0
Freshman setter Salma Gonzalez led the team with five kills and added eight assists, while senior setter Alee Quint led the team with nine assists and freshman libero Leiri Melendez and freshman outside hitter Brooke Sanford each led the team with four digs.
 
Freshman outside hitter Amanda Rullan Vilanova added four kills and three digs, while freshman middle blocker Karissa Tatum connected on four of five attacks for a hitting percentage of .600.
 
Savannah State scored three of the first five points in the first set to take a point lead, 3-2, but Maryland Eastern Shore scored eight of the next 11 points to take a four-point lead, 10-6.  The Lady Tigers scored the next two points to cut the lead to two points, 10-8, but MDES outscored SSU 15-6 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
The Lady Tigers scored six of the first seven points in the second stanza to take a 6-1 lead, but Maryland Eastern Shore scored the next four points to pull within a point, 6-5.  Savannah State scored three of the next four points to increase its lead to three points, 9-6, but the Hawks scored 10 of the next 15 points to take a two-point lead, 16-14.  Savannah State scored four of the next six points to take a point lead, 18-17, but MDES outscored SSU 8-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead. 
 
Maryland Eastern Shore scored four of the first six points in the final frame to take a two-point lead, 4-2, but Savannah State scored three of the next four points to tie the set at three.  The Hawks scored the next three points to take a three-point lead, 8-5, but the Lady Tigers scored back-to-back points to pull within a point, 8-7.  MDES outscored SSU 17-8 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
 
The Hawks were led by Iva Vujosevic with 13 kills and added a .550 hitting percentage, Carolina Machado with 29 assists and Lucia Babic with seven digs and added nine kills.
 
Hampton 3, Savannah State 0
Fuller led the Lady Tigers with seven kills and with a .545 hitting percentage, while Quint led the team with 15 assists and with three service aces and Gonzalez led with five digs and added eight assists and four kills. 
 
Junior outside hitter Ayree Gallon and junior middle blocker Charlinda Colbert each added four kills, while Colbert recorded a .500 hitting percentage.
 
Savannah State scored the first two points of the first set, but Hampton scored 12 of the next 15 points to take a seven-point lead, 12-5.  The Lady Tigers scored the next two points to cut the lead to five points, 12-7, but the Pirates scored the next three points to increase the lead to eight points, 15-7.  SSU scored the next three points to bring the lead back to five points, 15-10, but HU outscored SSU 9-6 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
The Pirates scored seven of the first eight points in the second frame to take a six-point lead, 7-1, but Savannah State scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to two points, 8-6.  Hampton scored six of the next seven points to increase their lead to seven points, 14-7, but the Lady Tigers scored six of the next seven points to cut the lead to two points, 15-13.  HU outscored SSU 10-8 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
 
Hampton scored 10 of the first 14 points to take a six-point lead, 10-4, in the final stanza, but the Lady Tigers scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to three points, 12-9.  HU outscored SSU 12-7 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match. 
 
The Pirates were led by Reeana Richardson with 18 kills, Lena Reed-Petracek with 16 assists and Maja Petronijevic with 14 digs. 
 
The Lady Tigers host Bethune-Cookman University Friday at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium for SSU's home and MEAC opener and host Florida A&M University Sunday at 1 p.m.
